Moelis India boss Manisha Girotra puts workplace diversity in perspective, stresses on empathy

At the modern workplace, as diversity becomes a buzzword, so does the need to address unconscious biases that society has conditioned within us. Manisha Girotra, CEO, Moelis India puts it in perspective. She says that “as more communities coexist, the need to be empathetic to different societies, to different cultures” is more pronounced than ever. Girotra says that movements in US (like #MeToo, #BlackLivesMatter etc) have helped increase that awareness, and it’s come to the workplace.

“Just recently someone told me that if you are in the US, and if I give you my CV, you can’t even see my age on it. Forget about [a mention of the] gender. It’s just your [applicant’s] name,” Girotra said. That ’s the level of awareness and empathy that one should have, according to her. Girotra asks a pertinent question: Why should the applicant’s age or gender be any criteria in deciding if organisations would like to call someone for an interview?
