Michelle Poonawalla's children frequently join her in the studio to paint.
Artist Michelle Poonawalla says her den, which doubles up as her office, lets in natural light and offers a view of greenery outside
A multi-purpose space “I conceptualised and designed my art studio as my own space, where I could work and host my meetings. I envisioned it as a multi-purpose space. So, it’s a gallery that has all my work on display, as also my work in progress pieces. As and when required, it also serves as a meeting room.
“I was clear that the space required as much natural light as possible and a view of the green expanse on the outside. To me, greenery is important. Since I enjoy painting when surrounded by nature, I have floor-to-ceiling French windows in my den.” The arched doors open into a garden. Doing it myself “I am also an interior designer and I designed my studio myself. It was an enriching pet project for me, and I enjoyed the selection of lights as well as the furniture. There is also a large brass and crystal light and comfortable leather chesterfield furniture.”

“My children frequently join me in the studio to paint, and it makes for great family time. My two children are creative and talented, and this space gives them the freedom to set their imagination free, to do what they like.” Michelle Poonawalla's studio has a dedicated space for a plush armchair. Entertaining guests “Since the studio is in my house, it has to match the décor and sensibility of the overall house and space. It is a multi-functional space, so when I paint, I cover the floor with a vinyl mat. When we entertain guests or have people over, the mat is removed and it becomes a gallery space.”
The view of green expanse on the outside is delightful. Writing on the wall “The walls of my den are only for art. From works that I am starting out, to ones that have been completed, or ones that are in their initial stages, the studio is a haven for art. I haven’t decorated the studio with posters or family photos yet.”

Sign on the door “The marble at the entrance door to my den has the letters MYP, which is an indicator that it’s my private space. I am often called by my initials MYP.” Michelle Poonawalla's studio has floor-to-ceiling French windows.

Inspiration comes calling “The studio is light, airy and positive. The arched doors open into my garden, making it a perfect place to paint, reflect or just unwind. The windows let in a lot of light since I like to feel one with nature. There is something calming here, which allows me my inspiration.”
Must haves “I believe every den must have a dedicated space for a plush armchair. It can give the room a vibe of its own, and make for a warm space.”
