The man, the myth, the legend - there’s perhaps no better way to describe the journey of Mammootty. Every actor’s journey is inspiring in its own way, but his story stands out for its determination and reinvention. Today, we take a look back at how the superstar turned his childhood dream into reality. He is currently gearing up for the release of one of the most anticipated films of the year, Patriot, alongside Mohanlal, Nayanthara, Kunchacko Boban, and Fahadh Faasil, which is slated to hit the theatres on May 1.

A childhood dream that never faded

Long before the fame and recognition, Mammootty had a clear dream, to become an actor. He once shared that his passion for cinema began when he was just 7 or 8 years old. Watching movies at such a young age left a deep impression on him, and that desire stayed with him as he grew older.

However, like many, he initially followed a more conventional path. He pursued law, earned his degree, and even began practising as a lawyer. But the pull of cinema never left him. In an interaction with Khalid Al Ameri, Mammootty recalled that although he had settled into a legal career and even got married, his passion for acting kept growing stronger.

His entry into films wasn’t carefully planned but came through a chance encounter. Mammootty revealed, "There was an accidental meeting with MT Vasudevan Nair, and when I was talking to him, he got impressed and he got my ambitions to become an actor. Then he offered me chances. That starts history."

For the unversed, Mammootty completed his law degree from Government Law College in Ernakulam and worked as a lawyer in Manjeri for nearly two years before fully shifting to films.

The late 1980s became a defining phase in his career. The 1987 film New Delhi is often credited which made him a superstar in Malayalam cinema. His powerful screen presence and ability to take on diverse roles helped him stand out.

Over the decades, Mammootty has acted in more than 420 films. He has received multiple National Film Awards, including honours for Oru Vadakkan Veeragatha and Mathilukal. Mammootty didn’t limit himself to Malayalam cinema. He expanded his reach with memorable performances in other languages, including films like Thalapathi and Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar.
