LAMY MD thinks handwritten notes a part of human tradition, have more value than digital messages

Remember handwritten thank you notes? What was once a common gesture of appreciation has been downgraded to maybe a quick thank you SMS or social media shout out. Sure it gets the job done, but the sentiment is well, not quite the same. It makes us wonder what the place of stationary in today’s digital age.

Thomas Trapp, Managing Director (International Sales), LAMY says that even though written communication is mostly done on cell phones, writing instruments still have their place in a world that is increasingly online. “We are totally convinced that writing by hand is justified and will continue to be justified. Writing by hand is a human tradition, it’s been around for 1000s of years – it’s where we all come from,” Trapp says.

He also adds that writing is especially important for children. “Nowadays we know there are a number of reasons to write by hand, especially for children. From different studies we know that when you write something by hand it goes through the hand and into your mind and stays there for longer. There is that crucial connection between the hand and the mind. It has higher recall value – especially with a fountain pen. With a fountain pen, you are made to write slower. Children need to learn how to write slowly… to think about what they write, and it will help it stay in their minds. This is just one reason,” he shares.


And there are just some things that can’t be captured without a pen. Trapp says, “Emotion and personality are also shown through writing – things that can sometimes be missed when typing.”
