He is recognised as one of the most iconic business figures in India, but in a note shared by his former secretary, you get a glimpse into the person behind the legend. According to Aloo Bharthania, the former secretary to JRD Tata, the industrialist was a class act.

In the note that Bharthania wrote for Humans of Bombay on the occasion of JRD’s 114th birth anniversary, she recalls her first dictation for the “handsome fellow,” and her “sweaty palms” due to nervousness. But mostly, she speaks of JRD’s kindness.

“He once took me and my family to a French restaurant in the Oberoi for my birthday. When he asked for the cheque, the manager told him that he didn’t have to pay. Mr. Tata jokingly said ‘Oh, you should have told me first — I would have ordered more!’” Bharthania writes.
