Keanu Reeves' still from his movie Matrix

Whenever we travel to a new place or country, we often look for recommendations on where to eat. Sometimes, a list of celebrity-approved cafes and restaurants can make the decision even easier. After all, who wouldn't want to know where their favourite star likes to eat? Keanu Reeves has his own memorable connection with a restaurant in San Francisco, but his story with the place is far more interesting than a simple celebrity dining recommendation.

It all started in 1997, when a young Keanu Reeves, dressed in black, visited House of Nanking in San Francisco. Instead of being given special treatment, the actor was asked to wait in the queue like every other customer. The restaurant's owner, Peter Fang, has always followed a simple rule: no celebrity gets to skip the line. Reeves was no exception.

Keanu Reeves had to wait like everyone else

House of Nanking was founded in 1988 by immigrant parents Peter and Lily Fong. Over the years, the San Francisco restaurant became known not only for its Chinese food but also for its strict approach to celebrities.

When Reeves arrived at the restaurant in 1997, Peter did not recognise him as the actor who would go on to become one of Hollywood's biggest stars. His daughter Kathy, however, immediately knew who he was.

According to SF Standard, Kathy reportedly tried to get her father's attention and suggested that the actor should be allowed to move ahead in the queue. Peter refused to make an exception. In fact, the situation became even more amusing when he looked at the actor and confidently assumed that he was Sean Connery.

Peter Fang mistook Keanu Reeves for Sean Connery

Peter, who did not closely follow movies at the time, called Kathy and said, "Kathy, come take a picture! It's him! It's Sean Connery!" Kathy quickly realised the mistake and apologised to Reeves.

Rather than getting offended, The Matrix actor reportedly handled the awkward moment with good humour. According to Kathy's recollection, the actor said he was honoured to be mistaken for someone as talented as Connery.

The encounter could have ended there, but Kathy took a photograph with Reeves before he left. She used a disposable camera, and the picture eventually found a place near the restaurant's front window.

The photograph stayed there for years and became a small reminder of the unexpected meeting between the restaurant owner's family and the young actor.

More than 20 years later, Reeves returned

The story took another turn in 2020, when Reeves was back in San Francisco to film The Matrix Resurrections. He returned to House of Nanking, this time not as an unknown young actor but as the star of one of Hollywood's most recognisable film franchises.

Reeves reportedly recreated the old photograph with Kathy, who was pregnant at the time. The new picture mirrored their 1997 photo and turned a decades-old restaurant memory into a full-circle moment.

But the connection between Reeves and House of Nanking did not end with his return for a meal.

House of Nanking became part of The Matrix

The restaurant was later chosen as one of the filming locations for The Matrix Resurrections. The production team arrived early in the morning to prepare the location for filming and reportedly paid close attention to the restaurant's existing details.

One of those details was particularly meaningful. The old photograph of Reeves and Kathy was reportedly kept visible as part of the restaurant's setting in the film.

That meant a real-life photograph from Reeves' first visit to House of Nanking became part of the world created for The Matrix Resurrections. It connected his personal history with the franchise that had played such a major role in his career.

The story even inspired a baby name

The Reeves connection also became part of Kathy Fang's family story. According to reports, Kathy and her husband had initially planned to name their son Hawk. However, after Keanu Reeves' connection with the family and the filming of The Matrix Resurrections, they reportedly changed the name to Neo, inspired by the character played by Reeves in the franchise.

What began with a young actor simply waiting in line at a San Francisco restaurant eventually turned into a story spanning more than two decades.
