My first car
“A Renault. It was cheap, small, but hey, it was my first car. I was 18, and I was in love with it. My current car, I always say, is an Indian car — a Jaguar XE. But I’m currently based in Delhi and the car is in Madrid. I don’t drive in India. The traffic is hellish.”
How I fell in love with cars
“As a kid, I loved playing with toy cars. Car rallying was also relevant in my hometown Ferrol, in northwest Spain. We used to have a car rally there which was a part of the Spanish rally championship. Some years later Spain’s Carlos Sainz became the world rally champion. That was a milestone for car lovers of that time.”
My dream car
“The No 1 car for any petrol head should be a Ferrari. My other dream car, one that I feel I will never be able to afford, is the Bugatti Chiron. Realistically, I have the Audi X6 in my sights. I also like the Maserati Ghibli. It’s not cheap, but not exorbitant. It’s a handsome car.”
Favourite places to drive
“Highways are boring. I like driving in the mountains. Two years ago, I drove through the Pyrenees between France and Spain. I suffer when I see Tour de France riders do this route on their bikes. But in a car it was beautiful.”
Challenging drive
“Delhi to Hrishikesh last year. I don’t drive in India, but my friends asked me if I’d take the wheel. A 200-km journey took more than seven hours. That alone gives you an idea that there was something uneasy about the journey. There was traffic, cattle, crowds. In Europe and the US, you know what to expect when you drive. In India you have to expect the unexpected.

“I like documentaries and realistic car movies, not the 'Fast and Furious' type. I enjoyed 'Grand Prix' and 'Le Mans', which had Steve McQueen. I also like Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May. They are knowledgeable about cars and funny, with a British sense of humour.
