Salary negotiations might be tough for many people. Some of us walk into appraisal meetings hoping for recognition but struggle to speak confidently about our worth. Even when we know that we deserve better pay, the pressure of the moment often makes it difficult for us to present the case clearly. The result? A Reddit user recently posted an elaborate write-up on the platform, sharing how he got a far better salary hike after practising his negotiation skills through an AI-based application. His story shows that prior preparation and practice are all you need to tackle high-pressure situations like this.

AI practice to the rescue

The professional admitted that negotiating salaries never came naturally to him. Working in a slow-moving company, he admitted having very little confidence during salary meetings. In his past job offers and appraisal discussions, he would simply accept whatever was proposed because the conversation felt uncomfortable. By the time the next performance review approached, he realised that he was earning nearly 20 per cent below the market rate for his role and was determined to approach the conversation differently.


For preparation, he gathered salary data from a few job-based platforms to get a grasp of industry standards before compiling a list of his top five professional achievements from the previous year. But what helped him the most was turning to a free AI model for help, which delivered simulated negotiation scenarios. In these exercises, while AI played the role of his manager, he practised presenting his case.

AI salary negotiation leads to decent increment

In his first attempt, the Reddit user confessed struggling to respond confidently when the AI ‘manager’ mentioned budget limitations, immediately backing down and agreeing without pushing his point. But after eight to ten rounds, he became more comfortable addressing objections, learning to respond calmly and supporting his request with research-backed reasoning.


During the real-life appraisal meeting, the employee demanded a 20 per cent salary hike. Although he did not receive the full amount, he was offered an 8 per cent raise, something he believes would not have happened earlier. According to him, he would have likely accepted a routine 3 per cent increment without question. Reflecting on the experience, the Redditor noted that the biggest hurdle was finding the confidence to say the right words during the conversation.
