Jana Nayagan box office collection Day 1: Thalapathy Vijay's farewell film opens strong. Fails to beat GOAT, Leo and Jailer worldwide

After facing several hurdles and delays, Vijay's final film, Jana Nayagan, finally hit theatres on Thursday (July 23). Directed by H. Vinoth, the film received positive responses from both audiences and critics on its opening day. Besides Vijay, Jana Nayagan also stars Mamitha Baiju, Prakash Raj, Bobby Deol, Gautham Vasudev Menon, Priyamani and Narain in key roles. The much-awaited release has now made a strong start at the box office.

Jana Nayagan box office collection day-wise

According to early estimates by Sacnilk, Jana Nayagan collected an estimated Rs 41 crore net in India on its opening day. The film's India gross collection stands at Rs 48.27 crore.

The film also performed well in overseas markets, earning an estimated Rs 30 crore gross. This takes its total worldwide opening collection to Rs 78.27 crore, making it one of the biggest Tamil film openings of the year.


The opening numbers show the excitement surrounding Vijay's final film. Fans turned up in large numbers for first-day-first-show screenings across Tamil Nadu and several international markets, giving the political action drama a solid start.



However, despite its impressive opening, Jana Nayagan fell short of entering the prestigious Rs 100 crore worldwide club on its first day. The film also could not surpass the opening-day collections of Vijay's previous blockbuster, The Greatest of All Time (GOAT). The Venkat Prabhu directorial had earned Rs 44 crore net in India on Day 1, with an India gross of Rs 51.39 crore. It went on to collect Rs 48 crore overseas, taking its worldwide opening to Rs 99.39 crore.

Another Vijay blockbuster, Leo, also recorded a significantly bigger worldwide opening than Jana Nayagan, making it one of the actor's strongest box office debuts.

The latest release also finished behind Rajinikanth's Jailer. Nelson Dilipkumar's action entertainer had collected Rs 48.35 crore net in India and Rs 56.36 crore gross on its opening day. With Rs 40 crore from overseas markets, Jailer had registered a worldwide opening of Rs 96.36 crore.

While Jana Nayagan has delivered a healthy start, its opening-day figures were not enough to overtake these recent Tamil box office giants.

Weekend collections now become crucial

With positive word of mouth and encouraging occupancy across key centres, attention has now shifted to how the film performs over its opening weekend. Trade observers believe the biggest share of the film's earnings will come over the first three days, driven by Vijay's massive fan following. However, the real test will begin once the initial excitement settles.

For the unversed, Jana Nayagan marks the end of Vijay's acting career as he prepares to focus on politics full-time. The actor had earlier announced that he would step away from films after completing his final project.

The release itself was delayed after the film reportedly ran into certification issues. It was originally expected to arrive during the Pongal festival but was postponed after the certification process took longer than anticipated.

Over the last three decades, Vijay has established himself as one of Indian cinema's biggest stars with several blockbuster films to his name. Movies such as Ghilli, Pokkiri, Bigil, Master, Leo and The Greatest of All Time helped cement his position as one of Tamil cinema's most bankable actors.

As Jana Nayagan begins its theatrical run, all eyes will now be on whether Vijay's farewell film can maintain its momentum over the coming days. Stay tuned!
