Jailer 2 box office collection day 17: Rajinikanth's film beats its predecessor, inches towards Rs 800 crore worldwide

It has been 17 days since Rajinikanth's Jailer 2 hit theatres, and the sequel is showing no signs of slowing down. Directed by Nelson Dilipkumar, the Tamil action film has surpassed the lifetime worldwide collection of its predecessor, Jailer, and is now steadily moving towards the Rs 800 crore mark at the global box office. The film features an ensemble cast, including S. J. Suryah, Vidya Balan, Mithun Chakraborty, Suraj Venjaramoodu, Ramya Krishnan, Yogi Babu and Mirnaa Menon.

According to early estimates by Sacnilk.com, Jailer 2 collected Rs 9.35 crore net across 8,738 shows in India on its 17th day. The Tamil version continued to lead the domestic earnings, contributing Rs 6.70 crore from 4,199 shows.


The Hindi version added Rs 1.45 crore from 3,549 shows, while the Telugu version earned Rs 90 lakh through 801 screenings. The Kannada version contributed another Rs 30 lakh from 189 shows.




With these collections, the film's total India net collection stands at Rs 444.75 crore. Its domestic gross earnings currently stand at Rs 520.35 crore.

The sequel has also maintained a strong run in overseas markets. It earned Rs 3 crore on Day 17, taking its total overseas gross collection to Rs 270.50 crore. This brings its worldwide gross collection to Rs 790.85 crore. With the Rs 800 crore milestone now within reach, the film needs another Rs 9.15 crore to achieve the mark.

Jailer 2 beats Rajinikanth's first film at the worldwide box office

The sequel has additionally surpassed the original Jailer in lifetime worldwide grosses. The difference in the box office of the two movies is proof of the scale of the sequel’s theatrical run.

According to TOI report, the first Jailer collected Rs 3.40 crore pan India on Day 16 of its theatrical run in 2023. The Tamil version raked in Rs 2.60 crore from 1,583 shows and the Telugu version minted Rs 60 lakh with 732 screenings. The Hindi and Kannada versions earned Rs 10 lakh each from 258 and 122 shows.

The original movie had witnessed an increase of 11.5 per cent in its collection on Day 16 over Rs 3.05 crore of the previous day. Its total India net collection was Rs 302.20 crore by that time, while domestic gross earnings touched Rs 350.74 crore. Its worldwide gross collection reached Rs 533.74 crore with Rs 183 crore coming from overseas markets.

In comparison, Jailer 2 has collected Rs 790.85 crore worldwide. This means the sequel is ahead of the original by Rs 257.11 crore, making it a much bigger box office success in terms of overall earnings.

Jailer 2 cast, story and other details

Produced by Sun Pictures, Jailer 2 brings Rajinikanth back as Tiger Muthuvel Pandian, the character who became popular with audiences in the first instalment.

Rajinikanth has previously declined sequel opportunities for a number of his successful movies, so the sequel is a noteworthy addition to his filmography.

Apart from Rajinikanth, the film features S. J. Suryah, Vidya Balan, Mithun Chakraborty, Suraj Venjaramoodu, Ramya Krishnan, Yogi Babu, Mirnaa Menon, Anna Rajan and Jatin Sarna. Ramya Krishnan, Yogi Babu, Mirnaa and Rithvik reprise their respective characters from the first film, while several new faces have joined the franchise.

Nelson Dilipkumar has directed the sequel, with Anirudh Ravichander composing the music.
