Internet gets divided over Rs 40,000 custom-made pillow in Japan
Vipandeep Kaur, an Indian chartered accountant, bought the pillow from Nishikawa, a Japanese bedding brand, at its store in Nihonbashi. The shop is said to be around 400 years old. She shared a video of the experience on Instagram on November 4. She explained that she had never paid much attention to her sleep earlier, but things had changed as she grew older. "I have never really paid so much attention to my sleep in my life. But as I am getting older, my sleep is getting worse," she said. She added that her neck had been affected by using her laptop and mobile phone throughout the day. Since she loves sleeping, she considers the purchase a worthwhile investment.Take a look below:
What makes the pillow worth Rs 40,000?
Unlike an ordinary pillow picked from a store shelf, this one is prepared after assessing the customer's body and sleeping habits. Kaur explained that experts first measure the neck and examine the customer's posture. They then ask the person to lie down on pillows of different heights to find the most suitable support. The fabric is also selected according to the customer's requirements. The pillow is filled with small black Binchotan charcoal pipe beads. These are used as filling material to provide support and comfort. A report by The Tribune also detailed the process, highlighting how the pillow is customised after examining the customer's posture and sleeping needs. What Do Experts Say About Pillows And Neck Pain?
While a suitable pillow can help improve sleeping posture, spending more money does not automatically mean better results. Harvard Health advises people with neck discomfort to choose a pillow that supports the natural curve of the neck. It also warns against pillows that are too high or stiff, as they can leave the neck bent during sleep. A customised pillow may likely improve comfort, but it should not be treated as a guaranteed cure for persistent neck pain.Internet Reacts To The Expensive Purchase
Kaur's video quickly attracted attention, reportedly receiving more than 300,000 views within four hours of being shared. Social media users had mixed reactions. While some praised her decision to spend on better sleep, others questioned the high price. "If only I had that kind of money!" one user commented. Another wrote, "Wow, this is genuinely worth it." Some users, however, felt that changing daily habits, particularly reducing phone use, could also help. For Kaur, the purchase is an attempt to make sleep a priority. Whether the Rs 40,000 pillow delivers the comfort she hopes for remains to be seen. The Economic Times Business News App for the Latest News in Business, Sensex, Stock Market Updates & More.
