Lionel Charles, CEO and Founder, IndiaFilings has a commercial pilot license. He has taken lessons in both flying and skydiving. He told ET Panache, "The biggest lesson I have learnt from flying and skydiving is to have no fear, remain calm under stress and work through a problem without panic."

A large part of pilot training revolves around simulating catastrophic failure and having the pilot recover from the failure and landing the aircraft safely. During his training, the tax compliance platform boss reveals that his instructors often used to shut down the engine or put the aircraft in a stall or spin and have him recover from those critical situations.

He explained, "To safely recover from an engine shut down or spin, you need to first have no fear, be able to think clearly and perform multiple-tasks for recovering. This training helps me in my business every day. Running a business with more than 500 employees and 70,000 client is like flying a Boeing 747."

Some days it's a calm and beautiful day at the office wherein everything is working like expected. On some days it's like thunderstorms and turbulence with all sorts of things going wrong, he shared. "On those days, I try to first have no fear, think clearly and work through the problem. This has helped me get the business to where it is today and guide it through the various challenges we have faced," he added.

During his flight training, Charles says he had the toughest flight instructor at the academy as his teacher. "A lot of students used to hate him - saying he is very strict and expecting unnecessary levels of standards in flying. He used to say, 'a lot of students think they have to train and perform at their best on the exam day and pass. On other days, no one cares about performing to standard'. But, he also said, 'a real pilot must be able to perform to standard and pass the exam on his worst day when he hasn't slept or is under severe stress. That is a true mark of professionalism'. That lesson, I have never forgotten," he said.

Today, the IndiaFilings CEO says he applies that lesson to his business. "A true entrepreneur must be able to perform and keep the business running even under the worst economic condition," he ended.
