Gen Z employees and millennials often bring noticeably different attitudes to the modern workplace, shaped by the social, economic and technological environments they grew up in. While millennials entered their careers during a period of traditional office culture and changing digital trends, Gen Z has stepped into professional life with different expectations around communication, boundaries, flexibility and career growth. These generational differences can sometimes lead to contrasting approaches to workplace etiquette, productivity and leadership, but they can also create opportunities for both sides to learn from each other. Recently, a millennial manager shared a post on Reddit revealing three workplace lessons Gen Z employees taught him.

Gen Z employee taught manager to protect his time

As per the post, the millennial manager had worked with a Gen Z employee or younger millennial for around three years. Although their professional relationship had involved occasional disagreements and moments that required coaching about workplace expectations, the manager said the experience had also changed his own approach to work.

The Gen Z employee's strong focus on protecting personal time particularly influenced him. The manager realised that he did not need to routinely work 12-hour days, especially when his organisation itself promoted work-life balance. This helped him become more comfortable leaving tasks that could reasonably wait until the following day.

Gen Z employee made manager question old practices

The manager also credited the Gen Z employee's tendency to question established processes with helping him grow professionally. While some suggestions were not always realistic, others encouraged him to pause and reconsider decisions instead of automatically accepting practices simply because they had existed for years.

Coming from a more traditional workplace mindset centred on following instructions and completing the job, the manager found this willingness to challenge established norms refreshing.

Gen Z employee helped manager recognise his value

The third lesson involved the Gen Z employee's confidence in recognising their own worth. The manager viewed this attitude as entitlement in a positive sense, explaining that it encouraged him to place greater value on his own abilities and work as well.

While he acknowledged that Gen Z employees can sometimes test his patience, he also felt they were helping reshape workplace thinking. At the same time, he stressed that experience remains important and that skill or speed alone cannot replace the knowledge gained with time.
