Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been exhorting Indians to think out of the box when it comes to livelihoods though his example of selling pakodas appears not to have enthused either the jobless or the health-conscious. However, the ingenuity of an underemployed actor in Los Angeles is just the kind of lateral thinking the prime minister may want Indians to emulate. In a society plagued by both obesity and loneliness, ‘people walking’ is a befitting employment option for the US. At $35 an hour, it pays better than dog-walking and there is no added work of poop-scooping. It also offers the chance to strike up meaningful conversations with the ‘clients’ —generally not an option when escorting the canine species for their daily constitutionals. Professional cuddling is also a related ‘job’ and pays considerably more, but carries a high chance of occupational hazards.

The idea has already spread beyond the US and many Indians would also benefit from supervised roaming with unlimited free chatting. As it requires no training, equipment or investment (except, perhaps, some appropriate footwear), it is a suitable livelihood option for Indians from all walks of life. Moreover, apps can easily be devised to connect potential clients and walkers in every area, as a result of which jobcreation data can also take on a more healthy hue too.
