How Smriti Irani's former industry colleagues Ekta Kapoor, 'Mihir Virani' celebrated Amethi win

Mulayam Singh Yadav's family showed a rather subdued performance in this year's polls. While the leader and his son managed to win, his nephews and daughter-in-law weren't as lucky. Akshay, Dharmendra and Dimple Yadav failed to bring home glory in the Lok Sabha elections. Their loss was seen as the biggest jolt in the Yadav family so far.

The former sitting MPs lost their seats. Dimple lost hers in Kannauj, Dharmendra in Badaun and Akshay in Ferozabad. The SP's alliance with Mayawati-led Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) did not prove beneficial for the Yadavs.

While Akhilesh Yadav's wife lost by a margin of 12,000+ votes, Dharmendra and Akshay lost by a margin of over 18,000 and 28,000 votes respectively.

Congress president Rahul Gandhi, son of former PM Rajiv Gandhi and MP Sonia Gandhi, had a win and lose situation in this year's election. While the Gandhi scion won the Wayanad seat in Kerala, he failed to protect family bastion Amethi where he was trumped by Smriti Irani.

The 48-year-old lost by a hefty margin of 55,000+ votes in the territory which his family has been ruling for over three decades now.

Jyotiraditya Scindia, son of late Madhavrao Jivajirao Scindia, also tasted defeat this year. The former MP from Guna constituency contested elections from the same place on a Congress ticket.

After being elected and re-elected to the same seat for years, 2019 did not have victory in store for the Scindia scion. He lost to Krishna Pal Singh from Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) by a gap of over 1,25,000 votes.

Former CM of Bihar Lalu Prasad Yadav's children, Tej Pratap Yadav, Tejashwi Yadav and Misa Bharti, tasted defeat in the just-concluded Lok Sabha polls. The Rashtriya Janata Dal candidates had a tough time competing with the BJP-JD(U) combine in Bihar.

Daughter Misa lost in Pataliputra to BJP's Ram Kripal Yadav by a margin of 39,000+ votes. Tej and Tejashwi Pratap, too, failed to make it to the Lok Sabha in the absence of their father, the party chief.

Another political dynasty that got bowled out were the Chautalas of Haryana. Former Haryana CM Om Prakash Chautala's grandsons Digvijay and Dushyant Chautala lost the elections.

Dushyant, the son of Ajay Chautala, formed his own political party Jannayak Janata Party. The oarty, however, did not gain electoral traction and lost in the elections.

A strong political dynasty of the south is the family of former Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda. His grandson Nikhil Kumaraswamy was the Janata Dal (Secular) debutante this year and was pitted against actress Sumlatha Ambareesh, an Independent backed by the BJP. The two competed for a Lok Sabha seat from Mandya but Kumaraswamy was not convincing enough and lost to Sumalatha by a margin of 1,25,000+ votes.

Veteran Congress leader Santosh Mohan Dev's daughter, Sushmita Dev, contested this year's elections from Silchar, Assam, on a Congress ticket. She competed against BJP's Rajdeep Roy Bengali and lost by a margin of 81,000+ votes.

Sunil Dutt's daughter Priya Dutt (Pic: in right) failed to make a mark in Mumbai North Central. Contesting on a Congress ticket, she was pitted against BJP's Poonam Mahajan (Pic: in left). Despite strong campaigning and her father's political legacy, she lost the elections by a margin of 1,30,000+ votes.

The Congress party suffered a streak of loss this year. Former Congress leader Murli Deora's son Milind Deora tasted defeat this year. The Mumbai Congress chief was pitted against Shivsean's Arvind Ganpat Sawant and lost by a hefty margin of 1,00,000+ votes.
