Newly-wed badminton star Saina Nehwal is having a busy 2019 with tournaments lined up. While she is currently ranked at No 9, the Olympic bronze medallist, at an event recently, recalled her days at the top of the table in 2015 and what her subsequent injury taught her.

“I was on top of the world, literally and everything seemed to be going my way. Then I had this injury which needed surgery. It was unexpected. But my parents and coaches stood firmly behind me.”

Nehwal recalled how her parents would wait for her at the gym to motivate her through her rehab and recovery.

Returning to the top spot again would be a dream come true. “I’m trying my best to play as well as I can. I’ve been in the top 5 and beaten some of the top players. My injured knee is far from what it was earlier, but I’ve understood how to get the most from it,” she said.
