How badminton star PV Sindhu carved a niche for herself

The big bucks

Last year, the badminton star became the the only Indian athlete to be named in the World's Highest-Paid Female Athletes 2019 list by Forbes. She also is the is the top-grossing non-cricket athlete from the country, With earnings worth $5.5 million, she secured her position at the 13th place.

The shuttler made most number of endorsement deals after Team India skipper Virat Kohli.

Sindhu made her entry into the international circuit in 2009 when she was 14, and earned her career-high ranking of No. 2 in 2017. Later, she went on to receive honours like Arjuna Award in 2013, Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award in 2016, Padma Shri in 2015 and Padma Bhushan in 2020.

In 2018, Sindhu became the first Indian to win the season-ending BWF World Tour finals. She win a World Championships gold medal by defeating Japan's Nozomi Okuhara in the tournament finals that took place in Basel, Switzerland.

Before the country went under a lockdown in March, the athlete became BBC's first ever Indian Sportswoman of the Year. She also bagged three honours at Times of India Sports Awards 2019 (TOISA) - Sportsperson Of The Year, Badminton Female Player Of The Year and Unbreakable Spirit Of Sports.


Family matters

Family is the backbone of Sindhu's success. Time and again she has informed that her family has inspired and supported her throughout her career.

During her Father' Day post last month on Twitter, the 25-year-old sports star credited her father for being her support system. "He has been my strength all along, silently stood behind me through my high & lows and made me what I am today," she had written .

In an older post, Sindhu had even said that her mother's encouragement inspires her to face and beat all challenges she comes across.


Sindhu shares her birthday with her two-year-old nephew, Aaryan. The loving aunt took to Instagram to share a glimpse of their lockdown birthday celebrations. The theme of the birthday theme was blue and glitter.


Lockdown lows
The lockdown has been difficult for the sports stars who are unable to train and improve their game. To beat the blues, Sindhu has been using this time to relax and read.

Olympic 2016 silver medallist P.V. Sindhu made India proud last month when she become the first Indian to win gold at the badminton World Championships in Basel, Switzerland.



The 24-year-old shuttler has bagged the first-ever Asian Games silver medal for India in the women’s singles badminton event of the Asiad 2018. She also won her third medal in the women's singles final of the World Badminton Championships at Glasgow, and became the first Indian to win Korea Super Series Title.



The badminton player also featured in the Forbes 2019 World’s Highest-Paid Female Athletes list last month.
