AHMEDABAD: Twenty-two-year old Hitesh Singh, son of a chauffeur, has been selected for postgraduate programme at Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad (IIM-A), the country's premier management institute. It was a dream come true not only for Hitesh but for his 49-year-old father too.

Hitesh's father Pankaj Singh, who is employed as a driver for Gujarat Co-operative Milk Marketing Federation Ltd (GCMMF) managing director R S Sodhi, often accompanied his boss to IIM-A. While waiting for his boss, who gave lectures at the institute, Singh would routinely look around the sprawling campus with its famous red-brick architecture and wondered if children of parents from humble backgrounds can ever enter this campus. He had a feeling that only affluent class could afford to send their wards to an institute of such repute.

The father's dream came true and his fears were allayed when he recently accompanied Hitesh for personal interview- the last stage for a student to enter the gates of what is regarded as one of the top 50 management colleges in the world. Hitesh has been selected for the two-year Post-Graduate Programme in Food and Agri-Business Management.

"Every time I visited the campus with my boss, I used to silently pray for my son to get admission here someday. That dream has come true today," says the proud father.

Singh and his family migrated from a village in Bihar to Anand where Hitesh was born. Pankaj Singh worked as a security guard initially earning as little as Rs600 per month. He learnt driving and joined GCMMF in 2007.

Hitesh, who has done his schooling from a Gujarati medium school, was in the 97 percentile club in physics, chemistry and maths in class XII exams. He has studied on scholarship from his school days and has never attended tuition classes. Hitesh says it was his mother who taught him at home.

"I figured out early in my life that to get me and my family out of financial hardships, I'll have to study hard. Although I did my schooling in Gujarati medium, language has never been a barrier for me," says Hitesh, who lives in a 2 BHK house with his family in Anand. He topped in BTech in dairy technology from SMC College of Dairy Science, Anand Agricultural University. Hitesh scored 96.12 percentile in Common Aptitude Test (CAT). To pay IIM-A fees, he plans to take a loan of Rs 23 lakh.

While his father has played a big role in shaping his dreams, Hitesh says that GCMMF's Sodhi is also a huge inspiration for him. With Sodhi, the man at the helm of Amul - India's largest co-operative being his inspiration, Hitesh is keen to pursue a career in the dairy sector.
