Hiring manager reported candidate absent, minutes later HR revealed the truth
Job interviews can be stressful for candidates, but sometimes the problem is not on the applicant's side. A Reddit post shared by a hiring manager has drawn widespread attention after an interview candidate was mistakenly considered a no-show. What initially looked like an applicant failing to attend an interview turned out to be a recruitment mistake that prevented the candidate from joining in the first place.

What Happened During the Scheduled Interview?

The incident was shared by a hiring manager on Reddit, who explained that recruiters at their company are responsible for arranging remote interviews, sending invitations to applicants, and providing hiring managers with candidate resumes before the meeting.

According to the post, the manager reviewed the applicant's resume a few minutes before the interview and noticed that the candidate had not logged into the virtual meeting room. The hiring manager joined the interview at the scheduled time and waited for the applicant to arrive.

When nobody joined after 10 minutes, the manager ended the meeting and contacted the recruiter to report that the candidate had not shown up.

The recruiter then looked into the matter. A few minutes later, the real reason emerged.

The hiring manager revealed that the recruiter admitted, “he never sent the applicant the interview invitation. Like seriously? That's your job.”

Recruiter's Admission Surprises Reddit Users

The mistake itself caught many readers off guard, but what surprised them even more was that the recruiter openly acknowledged the error.

One commenter wrote, “I'm surprised/impressed that HR even owned the mistake. In my experience, HR would just let you believe the candidate was a no show.” Another user shared a similar reaction, saying, “Honestly, it shocks me the recruiter messed up”

A third commenter added, “At least the recruiter was honest. Could blame it on the candidate.”

Many users said candidates are often unfairly blamed when communication breaks down during the hiring process. Several felt the recruiter deserved credit for accepting responsibility rather than allowing the applicant to take the blame.

Similar Experiences Shared by Job Seekers

As the discussion grew, many Reddit users began sharing their own experiences with missed interviews and recruitment mix-ups.

One applicant recalled waiting for a Teams invitation that never arrived. Later, they received calls and messages asking why they had not joined the interview. After investigating, the recruiter discovered the invitation had been sent to someone else with the same first name.

The user wrote, “Recruiter said they’d send a Teams invite, but it never arrived. On Weds. at 1:00, I got a phone call, email, and text asking if I was going to join the call. What call?”

Another commenter described showing up for an interview and waiting 45 minutes before discovering nobody from the company was attending. The recruiter later tried to convince them they had arrived at the wrong time.

Others said they had received surprise interview calls without confirmation, while some reported recruiters repeatedly failing to follow up after scheduling discussions.
