Popular Malayalam director quit his IT job to enter the industry, worked with Prithviraj Sukumaran and Basil Joseph. Who is Vipin Das?

The Malayalam film industry is gearing up for the release of the much-awaited movie Vaazha 2 - Biopic of Billion Bros, and the recently unveiled trailer has already grabbed the headlines with references from classic Malayalam movies like Premam starring Nivin Pauly and Sai Pallavi. The film, directed by Savin SA and written by Vipin Das, promises to carry forward the humour, friendship and coming-of-age themes that made the first instalment popular among young viewers. With the sequel set to hit theatres worldwide on April 2, fans are also keen to know more about the writer behind the story, Vipin Das, whose journey into cinema is as interesting as his films.

From IT professional to filmmaker: The journey of Vipin Das

Vipin Das did not take the conventional route into the film industry. Before entering cinema, he worked in the IT sector, but his passion for storytelling eventually pushed him to leave his stable job and pursue filmmaking full-time. In a 2022 interview with The Hindu, Vipin revealed that he had never assisted any director and instead learnt the technical and creative aspects of filmmaking by making short films and advertisements. He said that these early projects helped him understand how to manage a film crew and develop his own style as a storyteller.




His first major breakthrough came with his directorial debut Mudhugauv in 2016. Though modest in scale, the film helped him establish himself as a filmmaker to watch out for. He later directed Antakshari, which was released directly on SonyLIV in 2022, allowing him to reach a wider audience through the digital platform.

Vipin’s biggest success, however, came with Jaya Jaya Jaya Jaya Hey (2022), which turned out to be one of the major hits of the year and earned praise for its mix of humour and social commentary. The film was also remade in other languages as well. He followed it up with Guruvayoor Ambalanadayil (2024), featuring Basil Joseph and Prithviraj Sukumaran in lead roles.

What to expect from Vaazha 2

Coming back to the film, Vaazha 2 - Biopic of Billion Bros is a sequel to the 2024 film Vaazha - Biopic of a Billion Boys. The new film revisits the lives of its central characters as they navigate the chaos, friendships and emotional ups and downs of college life. The trailer suggests that the sequel will retain the light-hearted tone of the original while also adding deeper emotional moments and a sense of nostalgia.



The film is produced by Vipin Das along with Harris Desom, Sahu Garapati, P.B. Anish, Adarsh Narayan and Icon Studios, making it a collaborative project backed by multiple producers. The cast includes Hashir, Ajin Joy, Vinayak and Alan Bin Siraj in prominent roles, along with well-known faces such as Alphonse Puthren, Biju Kuttan, Sudheesh and Vijay Babu. Several popular digital content creators are also part of the film.

Vipin has often said that he prefers to experiment with different genres rather than repeating himself. In the same interview, he shared that he constantly tries to explore new narratives to keep his filmmaking fresh and relevant. This approach is visible in his filmography, which ranges from romantic comedies to socially driven dramas and now youth-centric stories like Vaazha.

With Vaazha 2 set for release soon, the film is expected to attract strong interest, especially among younger audiences who connected with the first film’s relatable characters and college setting. Stay tuned!
