It is never too late to start something new. Sometimes in life, we think more about missed opportunities and our inability to fulfil a personal goal before ultimately giving up on that dream due to reasons ranging from family obligations, personal problems, or what society might think of our decision. But in the process, we forget that we are in no way answerable to anyone but ourselves and if you truly love something, it is better to start acting on it, no matter your age. This philosophy finds a reference in 71-year-old Rabindranath Biswas from Kolkata, whose story is meant to inspire you.

If you have been following social media, you might have come across Rabindranath Biswas’ Instagram handle (gaan-dadu), where the elderly man can be seen delighting users with his song covers and renditions of popular songs. His talent even caught the attention of eminent musicians like Shashwat Sachdev and Salim Merchant.

71-year-old almost lost his passion for music

Rabindranath Biswas was born in a small village near Kolkata, as per a report by the Official Humans of Bombay. His father was a lawyer and much like in most middle-class families, the focus of his parents was for Rabindranath to study hard and land a decent job for a stable and secure life. However, Rabindranath’s passion lay in music. He used to sing secretly at home, hiding from his father and when he went to court for his professional duties, Rabindranath would play the songs of legendary Kishore Kumar and Manna Dey, attempting to match the sargam.

Later in college, Rabindranath Biswas practised singing after classes and football matches, lending his voice to songs and inviting friends under the open sky to join the session. Although he took up teaching as his profession, music never left him, as Rabindranath continued to perform old songs at local programmes. He got married and welcomed 2 kids, who, interestingly, picked up their father’s love for music. Unlike his own father, Rabindranath gave his children full freedom to learn music.

One decision changed his life forever

50 years went by in a jiffy and Rabindranath Biswas was diagnosed with kidney problems, forcing him to take complete rest. He was so upset that he stopped singing until his sons pushed him to do a song recording. Last year in December, Rabindranath posted a video of himself singing Arijit Singh’s much-loved Bengali song Mon Majhi Re, which turned out to be a hit on the internet, earning praise from industry professionals. His sons showed him the lovely comments and he kept on reading them.

That’s how Rabindranath Biswas found his way back to singing. Although his health is fragile, he feels a little more himself when music fills the house. One of his sons records his videos while the other brings him new songs to try. More recently, Rabindranath won hearts by singing the melodious Dhurandhar 2’ track Phir Se by Irshad Kamil, Shashwat Sachdev and Arijit Singh. His experience had made him realise that life has its own rhythm and all you need to do is tune in and everything will fall into place.
