Google I/O 2022: Immersive View on Maps, Multisearch, 8 Indian languages added to Google Translate

The upgrades have been announced to enhance the usability of Google’s tools.

The Google I/O 2022 came up with a series of features and updates that are not only user-intuitive but also ease many everyday challenges. The tech giant has come out with a series of upgrades on Google Maps, Google Search and Google Translate. These developments have been rolled out considering the evolving needs of Google’s vast user base.

For over a decade, Google Maps has worked to create accurate and useful representations of information to help millions of people navigate. At the event, Google CEO Sundar Pichai announced that advances in AI are taking the Google Maps experience to another level. The company is expanding is offering enhanced coverage even in the remotest areas on the planet.

Accessing The Remotest Corners

Pichai said that Google has mapped around 1.6 billion buildings and over 60 million kms of roads to date. Google has used computer vision and neural networks to detect buildings at scale from satellite images in order to map rural and remote areas that have been inaccessible. Pichai in his address said that the company has been able to increase the number of buildings on Google Maps in Africa five times from 60 million to 300 million since July 2020. He said that Google has doubled the number of buildings mapped in India and Indonesia in 2022. Google Maps are also helping organisations like the United Nation and World Bank to understand population density.


Immersive View & Eco-friendly Routing
The latest tool will let users experience neighbourhoods, landmarks and restaurants even without being present there. The new tool makes Google Maps more immersive and intuitive. The updates are backed by AI to offer accurate details of traffic and other location-based information.

Google Maps eco-friendly routing has got major improvements. The feature that was rolled out in 2021 allows users to pick the most fuel-efficient route helping them save money, time and fuel. The tech giant said that eco-friendly routes have already been rolled out in the US and Canada.

Google which is the default search engine for billions has announced a series of updates. One of its prominent features, the Multisearch, also got an update at the event. A new feature called scene exploration has been included in Multisearch. The feature combines text, voice, visuals and more. Scene exploration was demonstrated at the event showing viewers how instantly it identified items that met set criteria. Another mode 'Near me' on multi-search allows users to take pictures of objects and then find results locally.
