Google, on Thursday, marked Teachers' Day with an animated doodle.

The doodle features an octopus as a teacher standing in front of a black-board and solving problems of various subjects. Fish, carrying notes, solving math equations, also appear as students.

The tradition of celebrating Teachers' Day on September 5 began in India in 1962. Internationally, Teachers' Day is held on October 5 to commemorate the anniversary of the adoption of the 1966 ILO/UNESCO Recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers.


In India, the day marks the birth anniversary of former president Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan.

Born on September 5, 1888 in Tamil Nadu, Radhakrishnan completed his education from Madras Christian College. His passion for education led him towards the profession of teaching, and he taught at several educational institutions including Mysore University, Madras Presidency College, Oxford University, University of Chicago, and Calcutta University.

A teacher and promoter of education, he went on to become India's first Vice President and second President.

In 1954, he was awarded the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian award. Dr Radhakrishnan was also nominated for the Nobel Prize multiple times.

He passed away on April 17 in 1975.
