A twist to the classic modak, this recipe will win hearts.
Ganesh Chaturthi marks the birth of Lord Ganesha, and is celebrated with much fervour around the country.
Also known as Vinayaka Chaturthi, the festival kicks off with the installation of Ganesha idols in homes, and at extravagant pandals.
The festivities that spread over a period of 10 days see sweets offered to Lord Ganesha. Modaks, considered a favourite of Lord Ganesha, form an important part of the festival.
So as you get ready to begin the celebrations, try your hand at this Chocolate Seeded Modaks recipe.
Ingredients Coconut (grated): 1 cup Jaggery (broken into small pieces): 2/3 cup

Dry fruits (raisins, pistachios, cashews): ½ cup All heart chocolate crackers (crushed): ¼ cup Ghee: 2 tsp A pinch of saffron, cardamom and nutmeg powder
For the cover Rice flour: 1 cup A pinch of salt

Ghee: 2 tsp Water: 1 cup
Method To make stuffing

- In a pan, heat some ghee and add in all ingredients slowly one after the other - Cook well on low flame till mixture becomes dry and grainy - Stir every few minutes
To make dough - Bring water to boil in a pan and add a tsp of ghee to it - Add salt, 1tsp ghee to flour and mix well - Add it to boiling water. Mix well on a low flame and let it cook - Knead dough while warm
To make modaks - Make small balls of the dough, flatten it, and add stuffing in the middle. Close and shape the modaks - Steam in a steamer for 4-5 mins

‘Modarpriya’ was the title given to Ganesha because of his love for modaks. According to Hindu mythology, once Goddess Parvati offered her two sons, Karthik and Ganesh, a modak. While both the brothers wanted to eat it, neither wanted to share. So as a contest she asked them to take three rounds of the world and the winner would get the modak as reward.
