Become fit and then receive a month's salary as bonus! Yes, that's Zerodha's new 'get healthy' initiative for employees

The company has announced that employees who reach their fitness goals will be given a month's salary as bonus.

As the pandemic advanced and locked things down, health took a backseat as mobility became restricted. Due to work-from-home and restrictions imposed in states, people became chair-bound. This led to a serious rise in discussions over health care issues. Several corporations around the world have been encouraging their employees to stay fit and healthy by coming up with different ideas and programmes.

Financial services company Zerodha, too, decided to become 'health-conscious' by launching an innovating initiative to help its employees stay fit and maintain a non-sedentary lifestyle.

Nithin Kamath, founder and CEO of Zerodha, on Saturday took to Twitter to inform his over 247K followers about the initiative. "Post the first lockdown, like everywhere, our team @zerodhaonline as a whole was probably the unhealthiest ever, due to the lack of physical activity, work-life imbalance, bad diet, & more," he said.

Zerodha has asked its employees to set a '12-month get healthy goal' and keep updating the management every month about the progress. In order to increase the participation, the company has announced that employees who reach their fitness goals will be given a month's salary as bonus.

And there's more, as the company has also announced a lucky draw where one winner will receive Rs 10 lakhs. "The transformation stories are super inspiring & pushing others to take action as well," Kamath further said, adding that that getting healthy improves professional performance as well.

The 'get healthy' program will be running permanently at Zerodha, thanks to the positive feedback received so far, Kamath announced. "Sharing to seed the idea among fellow entrepreneurs," he concluded.

While many others on Twitter called it inspiring and an innovative approach to reward the employees rather than punish them.

I found Amazon Unbound by Brad Stone to be a great read. The book talks about the past 10 years of Amazon - their culture, their challenges, and everything it took for them to be where they are. Another book that I recently read is Nehru and Bose: Parallel Lives. It was interesting to read the different perspectives of two such known and admired leaders of the nation.

I recently enjoyed watching The Courier on Prime Video. I loved the storyline and the production. Dominic Cooke did such a great job with the film. When it comes to podcasts, Freakonomics is one of my favorites. I love how informative and diverse their topics of discussion are. I’ve been following the podcast for a decade because of how well made and insightful it is. Definitely recommend this!

I recently completed Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind by Yuval Noah Harari and would recommend everyone to pick up this great read. You'll be surprised to know so many facts about humankind that you'll be stunned. Harari is the most qualified person living today to tell stories about our world.

Also, although I am not a movie buff, I do recommend The Godfather. It’s essentially the story of a family; it depicts the immigrant experience; it speaks to the history of race relations in America; it discovers universal themes, like the nature of good and evil, justice vs. revenge; and so much more.

My recommendation would be Flow by Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi. It is an intriguing book which can be interpreted by different people in different ways.

It made me think a lot especially on the framework of what it means to be productive and happy. Describing flow as a mental and physical state of being where one is completely absorbed and well matched to the task at hand, that everything else disappears from awareness. It explores different facets of being immersed. It’s a higher state of being and working.

I occasionally like watching movies, but I don’t have an absolute favourite. I usually watch action or action-comedy movies, as well as the movies my wife watches. I look at movies from a critical point of view and take down notes of what I learned from them.

I usually share these learnings in the form of Management Training for my subordinates and peers at work. I love the fact that I’m not the one who turns boardrooms into ‘boredrooms’.
