Around 65 per cent of Indians, particularly women and young adults (millennials, Gen Z), aim to spend more on unique travel experiences in 2020, found a recent survey commissioned by Airbnb. From the rise of immersive trekking adventures to vegan-friendly food experiences, travellers are seeking more unique, transformative and unforgettable experiences that they are willing to pay for, said the survey.

Travel Back in Time
One of the most popular holiday travel trends in 2020, Airbnb found, was the opportunity to travel back in time via a curated experience that allowed travellers to experience life from a long time ago. For example in Kyoto, travellers can walk through a Japanese garden in the heart of the city that was created hundreds of years ago or stay in one of the many well-preserved traditional Japanese homes.

Homes that featured historic keywords in their titles (i.e. historic, era, WWI, etc.) also saw a major boost in interest and have already been booked over 50,000 times in the last two months alone.

Chasing the Sun
Another trend that was said to be significantly on the rise was adventure travel.

Airbnb discovered that ‘Nature Experiences’, like staying in a snow igloo or doing a four-day spiritual trek through the Himalayas, was the top trending category globally among Gen Z (190 per cent) and baby boomers (177 per cent). Bookings for nature experiences saw an 103 per cent increase year-on-year, with ‘Animal Experiences’ and ‘Hiking Experiences’ rising 141 per cent and 128 per cent respectively.

Single guest bookings were also up 79 per cent with ‘Meditation Experiences’ increasing 106 per cent.
