According to CA Nitin Kaushik, the definition of wealth changes as the amount of money you accumulate increases. In a post on X, he listed five major milestones: Rs 5 lakh, Rs 50 lakh, Rs 5 crore, Rs 15 crore and Rs 100 crore. His point was that “each number buys you a different kind of freedom.” Rather than defining wealth through one universal figure, Kaushik connected each amount with a different stage of financial security and independence.
Rs 5 lakh: Emergency security
The first milestone in Kaushik’s framework is Rs 5 lakh. He described this amount as providing “emergency security”. It may not make you wealthy, but it definitely offers a financial cushion in times of emergency, without the need to borrow or use credit cards.Rs 15 lakh: Basic financial stability
The next financial milestone is Rs 15 lakh, which as per the CA, is "basic financial stability." Your emergency funds is sorted. So your priority changes. Now, the focus is in strengthening your financial base. It can offer greater flexibility in handling expenses, managing financial commitments and planning for the future.Rs 50 lakh: Meaningful investable capital
At Rs 50 lakh, your financial freedom level will be different. He described this amount as “meaningful investable capital.” The distinction is important because money can generated more money when a substantial corpus is invested appropriately over time. Instead of investing the monthly income, an individual with significant investable assets has another financial resource working in the background.Rs 5 crore: When work can become optional
The Rs 5 crore mark represents perhaps the most striking milestone in Kaushik’s wealth ladder. He said “work can become optional” at this level. It does not mean one has to quit their job. Instead, having a sizeable corpus can reduce dependence on monthly salary, and gives more freedom over how and where they work. Kaushik also illustrated the potential income from such a corpus using a 4% withdrawal rate. According to his calculation, Rs 5 crore at a 4% withdrawal rate could generate roughly Rs 20 lakh a year.Rs 15 crore: Comfortable financial independence
The next level is Rs 15 crore, which Kaushik described as “comfortable financial independence.” This size of corpus offers more financial flexibility. The important point is that financial independence is not necessarily about accumulating the largest possible number. It is about reaching a level where income from assets and available wealth can support the lifestyle you desire or wish to maintain without complete dependence on employment income.Rs 100 crore: Different wealth level
CA called Rs 100 crore wealth “a completely different level of wealth.” The jump from Rs 15 crore to Rs 100 crore shows how the meaning of wealth drastically changes. At this milestone, having enough money or building retirement corpus is no longer the focus point. It represents substantial wealth that can provide far greater financial choices and freedom, which means one can make better future plans.Universal number for being rich
Despite laying out these figures, Kaushik's message was not that everyone should aim for Rs 100 crore. He stressed that there is “no universal ‘rich’ number.” For one person, Rs 5 lakh may provide an important sense of security. Another may need a significantly larger corpus to feel financially independent.According to him, the most meaningful milestone is reached when “money stops controlling your decisions.” That could mean having enough savings to leave an unsuitable job, enough investments to take a career break, or enough wealth to choose work based on interest rather than financial necessity.
