From returning to ‘The Kapil Sharma Show’ to helping AAP succeed, Navjot Singh Sidhu’s loss spirals into meme fest on Twitter

Politics is all about fair and equal opportunities and Thursday was a field day for netizens with five states announcing their Assembly elections results. It was also the conclusion for many celebrated leaders who were engaged in a high-octane campaign in the run-up to the elections.

Cricketer-turned-politician Navjot Singh Sidhu has been trending on Twitter ever since his loss in the poll battle. In what can be called one of the biggest upsets for the Congress, AAP consolidated its position with its thumping victory in Punjab.

Sidhu lost to Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) candidate Jeevan Jyot Kaur in the battle for the high profile Amritsar East seat. The loss has been unceremonious considering the 58-year-old has been sent thrice to the Parliament from Amritsar. Sidhu, one of Congress’ prominent candidates from Punjab, conceded defeat shortly after. However, his loss opened the floodgates of memes on Twitter.


Netizens were quick to draw parallels between his short stint as the host of ‘The Kapil Sharma Show’. “Navjot Singh Sidhu loses his Seat second time... First was to Archana Puran Singh,” quipped one user
Another user said that AAP, which won the election, should thank both Rahul Gandhi and Sidhu for their victory and weakening the Congress party.
Sidhu was also one of the judges from ‘The Great Indian Laughter Challenge’ that was aired between 2005 and 2008. Some of the memes were quick to suggest that Sidhu lost to Bhagwant Mann who appeared on the show as a contestant in the past.
Numerous memes suggesting that Archana Puran Singh, the present host of ‘The Kapil Sharma Show’ should be wary of Sidhu’s loss garnered several likes and retweets.
After the election debacle, Sidhu while conceding defeat said that he humbly accept the mandate of the people of Punjab and congratulated AAP.
