Happy birthday Sush! While she had many hits and misses at the BO, Sushmita Sen has never failed to dazzle us whenever she came on-screen.
Happy birthday, Sush! This leggy ‘Bongshell’ has enjoyed an illustrious career in Bollywood. She began her innings in the B’town with the 1996 psychological thriller ‘Dastak’ and went on to feature in some of the most watchable movies of the late 90s and early 2000s. Not all of her films were box-office blockbusters, but when it came to leaving the viewers spellbound she hit the bull’s eye. Below are some of her best on-screen outings :
‘Main Hoon Na
Farah Khan’s directorial debut was a riot. An out-and-out masala film, it was an ode to the Salim-Javed potboilers of yore.
Sen was a dream as Miss Chandni Chopra, the drop-dead gorgeous Chemistry (Farah Khan’s screenplay was anything but subtle!) teacher at a Darjeeling college! Sen looked like a dream as she glided in and out of frames. Clad in flowing chiffon sarees and armed with her million-dollar smile and come-hither eyes, Sen stole the show every time she appeared on the screen. Her scenes were few and far in-between, but she made the most of those and created a long-lasting impact.
‘Chingaari’
This Kalpana Lajmi film did not have much luck at the box office but nevertheless, Sen’s performance won rave reviews. Sen was virtually unrecognisable as Basanti the fiery and unapologetic sex worker who is unafraid to take matters into her own hands and exact revenge on Bhuvan Panda (Mithun Chakraborty) the lecherous village priest who oppresses the village under the guise of righteousness.
‘Vaastu Shastra’
Sush became the perfect ‘scream queen’ in this Ram Gopal Varma horror film. She was extremely convincing as the hapless woman trying to survive a zombie infestation. As her family members get killed and turn into the ‘living dead’ you can’t help but fear for Jhilmil (Sen’s character) when you watch her turn into a one-woman army trying to keep her son safe. Sen’s electrifying performance keeps your eyes glued to the screen from the beginning to the end.
‘Zindaggi Rocks’
This movie featured a Sen in her element. As Kriya, the free-spirited singer who wants to live life on her own terms, Sen is simply mesmerising. She is very believable as the larger-than-life rockstar whose only weakness in life is her frail son.

‘Maine Pyaar Kyun Kiya?’
This David Dhawan comedy film was ‘inspired’ by the 1969 screwball comedy ‘Cactus Flower’. Sen stepped into the shoes of Naina, a no-nonsense nurse who secretly holds a torch for her employer Dr. Sameer Malhotra (Salman Khan). With this movie, Sen proved that she has plenty of comic timing. She was brilliant as the long-suffering Naina who reluctantly agrees to play along an elaborate farce to keep her boss (and not-so-secret crush) happy. The things we do for love!
