Friday box-office report: 'Phone Bhoot' collects Rs 2.05 cr, 'Mili' rakes in Rs 40 L on Day 1
First-day BO reports for Bollywood films have been abysmal.

Is this the end of Bollywood? Three Bollywood movies released on Friday, struggle to keep afloat at the box-office.
The Saturday box-office report seems pretty grim for Bollywood. All Hindi movies that hit the theatres on Friday are tanking without a trace at the box-office.
‘Phone Bhoot’
‘Phone Bhoot’ starring Katrina Kaif, Ishan Khatter, and Siddhant Chaturvedi opened to low box-office numbers despite gathering a mostly positive WOM ( word of mouth) and decent to mixed reviews. According to reports, the ‘bhayanak comedy’ (horror-comedy) struggled to rake in single-digit numbers at the box-office. Taking to Twitter on Saturday (October 5), film trade analyst Taran Adarsh shared the first-day BO report of the Gurmmeet Singh directorial.
"Phone Bhoot records low numbers on day 1… Business did pick up towards evening shows, but not enough to record a healthy total… All eyes on day 2 and 3… Friday Rs 2.05 crore India business," he tweeted.

The survival thriller starring Janhvi Kapoor also saw a lackluster response at the box-office. According to a report by Boxofficeindia.com, the Mathukutty Xavier directorial (the film is a remake of his 2019 movie ‘Helen’) minted a paltry 35-40 lakhs at the BO. The movie revolves around Mili Naudiyal, a nursing graduate who battles with death, after getting trapped inside a freezer. Kapoor’s father veteran producer Boney Kapoor produced the movie.
‘Double XL’
The Sonakshi Sinha and Huma Qureshi starrer also struggled to find takers. Theis slice-of-life drama depicts the trials and tribulations of two chubby women. Despite its fresh and highly relatable concept, the movie’s BO collections turned out to be pretty disastrous.
According to a Boxofficeindia.com report, Double XL managed to collect in the range of ?12-15 lakh on the day of its release.

Before the pandemic, there was a market for more ‘story-centric’ movies that did not rely on star power but had engaging screenplays and relatable characters. ‘Dum Laga Ke Haisha’, ‘ Vicky Donor’ and ‘Queen’ were some of the prime examples of this type of film.
According to trade experts, the Covid-19 pandemic and the rise of OTT platforms had completely altered the tastes of the movie-going public. The mango people (the ‘aam junta’ or the general public) nowadays crave a grand, out-of-the-world cinematic experience when they are going to the theatres.
Which explains why the Hindi version of the Rishabh Shetty magnum opus ‘Kanatara’ has raced ahead of all the Hindi movies released on Friday and raked in more moolah at the box-office. According to Koimoi.com, and collected Rs 2 crore at the BO almost a month after its release. The Hindi dubbed version of the movie has crossed Rs 50 crore domestically recently according to a report by India Today.
Low-budget story-centric movies, quirky comedies, and slice-of-life dramas that enjoyed a small yet solid audience pre-pandemic seem to have been relegated mostly to the OTT space today.
