FWICE has objected to the film being selected as India's entry to Oscar 2023
Pan Nalin’s critically acclaimed coming-of-age drama ‘Chhello Show’ (the ‘Last Film Show’) is in the midst of a controversy regarding its eligibility for the Academy Awards. Days after the Gujarati film was selected as India’s official entry for Oscars 2023, the Federation of Western India Cine Employees (FWICE) has raised strong objections about this decision, claiming it is not an Indian film and thus not eligible to be India’s entry for Best International Feature Film at the 95th Academy Awards.
BN Tiwari, President of FWICE, told ETimes, “This movie is not an Indian film, and the process of selection is not correct. There were so many bonafide Indian movies like ‘RRR’ and ‘The Kashmir Files’, but the jury chose a foreign film that has been bought by Siddharth Roy Kapur.”

The FWICE wants a new jury which will come up with a more fair and impartial process of selecting Indian films for the Oscars. “We want a re-election of the films. The present jury should be dissolved. Most of them have been here for years and cast their vote without watching the film. If ‘Last Film Show’ is sent, it will reflect badly on India which is known to be an industry that produces the maximum number of films,” said Tiwari.
He also said that the authorities at FWICE will be writing to Information and Broadcasting minister Anurag Thakur to request these changes.
‘Chhello Show’ has been wowing critics across the world. The movie has beaten mighty contenders like SS Rajamouli’s ‘RRR’ and Vivek Agnihotri’s ‘The Kashmir Files’ to become India’s official entry in the Best Foreign Film category in Academy Awards 2023.
The movie explores the journey of Samay, a film enthusiast from rural Gujarat. The film would go up against other foreign films like South Korea’s ‘Decision to Leave’ and Mexico’s ‘Bardo’ in the final race towards the top prize.
