Director SS Rajamouli never expected that his latest period epic, RRR, would fare so well. In his speech at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), Rajamouli expressed that the movie’s success in the West came as a surprise to him. Particularly in the United States, the movie garnered a lot of praise from viewers and critics alike, which Rajamouli did not expect.

TIFF shared a video of the Baahubali director in which he said that though he believed that his stories would break the state borders, he never thought they would go beyond the country. He said that he made movies for Indians, which included the scores of Indian diaspora living across the globe. Rajamouli also mentioned the success of the Baahubali franchise, which grossed approximately Rs. 17 crore in Japan.

RRR was a bigger success in the United States than Rajamouli’s Baahubali franchise. The Ram Charan and NTR Jr. starrer made over $14.5 million in the US, which is about Rs. 115 crore. Likewise, RRR stayed on top of the non-English movies chart on Netflix US for several weeks. However, Rajamouli said that not only did he not expect success in the US, but he also did not even have an inclination for it while making the movie.

Out of the Rs. 1150 crore it has made in total, RRR made over Rs. 200 crore internationally. Critics in the US also showered RRR with a lot of praise. Writing for Deadline Hollywood, Stephanie Bunbury noted that Rajamouli’s masterpiece was bigger than Ben-Hur. In particular, the movie received heaps of praise for its CJI and VFX.
