Google’s mail service is getting an update that will enable users to filter search results to help locate a specific email that might have got lost in their inbox. Previously, users could key in search filters such as label:office, has:attachment, from: corporatecommunications@company.com .
Alternatively, they could use the drop down box to perform an advanced search by typing in additional search parameters like file size, predicted date of reception, and the address of the sender.
However, these options were unwieldy and time consuming, thereby restricting their usage. The upgraded search option with the Gmail app have new filters – called “search chips” – that are placed directly under the search box for easy access.
There are a number of filters available including ones that can categorise emails on the basis of sender, time frame, and whether or not they have attachments. Users will also be able to exclude a bunch of search results like system-generated emails, chats, or calendar updates. Multiple filters can be used in conjunction, helping users narrow down search results and identify important emails without scrolling through a number of related search results. For example, you can search for an email by entering a colleague’s name, mentioning that an Excel spreadsheet was attached to the email, and that the email was sent two months ago.
Google has acknowledged that the earlier search interface needed tweaking to improve user experience, saying that searches “could be faster and more intuitive.”
