Fast & Furious comes to television
Peacock has officially greenlit a new scripted Fast & Furious series based on the long-running action franchise. The show will expand the universe created by the films, although the makers have not yet revealed whether any of the popular characters from the movies will feature in the television project. The series is expected to premiere in 2028. For now, there is no confirmed release date beyond the year, and the makers have also not announced the show's official title.
When was the Fast & Furious series announced?
The television project was first revealed in May, when Vin Diesel spoke about it during NBCUniversal's upfront presentation. The actor, who has played Dominic Toretto since the first Fast & Furious film in 2001, said the team had spent years considering how the franchise could move into television.Diesel had initially spoken about multiple television projects connected to the Fast & Furious universe. However, NBCUniversal later clarified that only one scripted Fast & Furious series is currently in development, while other projects at Universal Television are at different stages.
The move to television comes at a time when the franchise is preparing for another major chapter on the big screen. The series is expected to premiere in the same year as the next Fast & Furious movie.
Who is making the new Fast & Furious series?
The upcoming series will be written by Mike Daniels and Wolfe Coleman. Daniels is known for his work on shows including Sons of Anarchy, Shades of Blue and The Rockford Files. The duo will serve as the co-showrunners, pilot writers and executive producers of the series.
Vin Diesel will also executive produce the project. He will be joined by Sam Vincent, Neal H Moritz, Pavun Shetty, Jeff Kirschenbaum and Chris Morgan as executive producers.
While Diesel is closely associated with the franchise, it has not yet been confirmed whether he will appear on screen in the new series.
Will Dominic Toretto be part of the series?
For now, that remains unclear. The makers have not revealed the plot, characters or cast details for the television show.Diesel's Dominic Toretto has been at the centre of the franchise since the first film, but there is no confirmation yet on whether the character will make the jump from the movies to television.
The series could potentially introduce a new set of characters and stories within the Fast & Furious universe, but the makers have not shared details about its direction.
Fast Forever is also coming in 2028
The television series will arrive in the same year as Fast Forever, the next film in the franchise. The movie is scheduled to release in theatres on March 17, 2028.
Louis Leterrier, who directed Fast X, is returning to direct the upcoming film. The movie will continue the theatrical side of the franchise as it moves into its next phase.
The timing means 2028 could be an important year for Fast & Furious fans, with both the new television series and another big-screen instalment arriving within the same year.
More about Fast & Furious franchise
The Fast & Furious franchise began with The Fast and the Furious in 2001. The original film starred Vin Diesel as Dominic Toretto, the late Paul Walker as Brian O'Conner, Michelle Rodriguez as Letty and Jordana Brewster as Mia.What started as a street-racing story gradually grew into a global action franchise featuring elaborate heists, international missions and increasingly large-scale stunts.
The franchise has released 10 films so far, with Fast X being the most recent instalment in 2023. Across its 25-year history, the movies have earned more than $7 billion worldwide.
The upcoming scripted series is not the first time the franchise has moved beyond the movies. Netflix previously released the animated series Fast & Furious: Spy Racers.
