Author Robin Sharma shares tips on how he keeps his mind, body and soul in sync.

Body
“I start off with exercise first thing in the morning. It increases my energy and releases endorphins, so I feel great. I like to mix it up. Some mornings, I run on the treadmill, I love spinning and attend Soul Cycle classes, I get massages twice a week, and spend time in nature which I find very restoring. I like mountain biking too. I exercise daily — even on Sunday — I like to move first thing in the morning, I feel much better when I do. Morning exercise is important for me because it gets the brain going and helps you through the day. I also have this concept called ‘second wind workout’, at around 4pm I will go for a walk. That sets me up for the evening. I choose something less intense that helps me contemplate and think through the day. Sometimes, I walk in silence, sometimes I like to listen to an audiobook and sometimes I listen to music.”

Soul
“Your soul is not just about religion. It’s about reaching your higher nature. Soul set is contemplating who you are truly, what your mission in life is, what your values are, how you want to be remembered to the world— that’s it. It’s very tactical and practical. I pray, I mediate. I spend a lot of time in nature which connects you to something higher than yourself. And I try to keep my soul calm by being an instrument of service and helping as many people as possible. What feeds my soul is helpfulness, art, travel, good food and beautiful restaurants, engaging conversations and all things beautiful. “Everyone talks about mind set and while it is important, I also believe in heart-set, which is your emotional life. It’s important that you don’t carry the pain of the past, or anger.”

Mind
“Mental health is very important. To keep my mind sharp, I journal, and I read. I also enjoy art — it keeps my eye and mind sharp. I try to remove toxic people from my life and try to be around interesting people. Brazil nuts, egg white omelettes, complex protein, lots of water, coffee to keep my brain sharp. And it’s important to remember it’s the foods that I don’t eat that help me keep my brain sharp. There’s a reason why people like Mahatma Gandhi, artists and many business tycoons eat very little food — it helps keep the mind sharp.”

Diet: “Most days I fast from 9 pm to 4 pm the next day. I do this for mental clarity and physical energy. However, I do have two cups of coffee in the morning because I feel that is great for enhancing my cognitive functions. My guilty food is carbs – a nice, big bowl of pasta. Or a chocolate croissant with a good cup of coffee.”
