Interior designing has almost become a hobby for Himanshu Wardhan.

Himanshu Wardhan's studio design has been inspired by Santorini in Greece, which happens to be my favourite vacation destination.
Himanshu Wardhan, MD, Etsy India, says he has designed his studio in blue and white, to remind him of his Greek getaway:

The third wheel
“I’m the kind of person who needs a third place, apart from an office and a home. Earlier, it used to be a public place, like a library or a coffee shop. But early last year, I decided to build myself this studio, since we had a plot of land in Gurugram and wanted to utilise it. It’s where I spend most weekends now.

“The studio’s design has been inspired by Santorini in Greece, which happens to be my favourite vacation destination. Like Santorini, this too has a lot of blue, white and grey tones.”

Creative expression
“I do not have a design background, academically or otherwise. But over the past couple of years, I have developed an interest in interior designing. It’s almost become a hobby. So, this was a great opportunity to design something for myself.

“The main idea was to keep this space open and well-lit. Natural light energises you. So, there are two large windows that look out into the garden and let in a lot of light. There is a table by one of the windows which I’ve designed myself. This serves many purposes: I sometimes read at the table, use it as a workstation for my creative projects, or even use it as a dining table.”

Donning the chef’s hat
“Being a foodie, cooking is another hobby for me. So, I have equipped this space with all the essentials for a good cooking session. I experiment with a lot of different cuisines. My latest interest is Mediterranean grilling. There is a garden outside with a small organic farm area where I grow vegetables. It’s literally a farm-to-table food experience, with the dining table sitting just 20 feet from the farm.”

All mine

“The studio is primarily for my personal use. My wife and daughter visit me here occasionally, staying for a couple of hours whenever they come over, but it’s largely a space where I spend my weekends by myself.

“Having said that, I do host people for social gatherings like lunches and dinners here. The outdoor area has a nice garden. There are white canopy tents in the garden where I have set up tables if I’m hosting, let’s say, a candlelight dinner. I also have an earthen tandoor, which I use for grilling kebabs or making rotis. I have almost catering-level equipment and crockery when I’m hosting.”

Bare walls
“In my Delhi home, I have a lot of artwork on the wall. But in the studio, I have deliberately kept the walls bare. It helps the natural light bounce off the walls better. That said, however, it is still a work in progress.”

For diversity, inclusion and collaboration to flourish, the corporate hierarchy has to give way and this is being witnessed increasingly. Instant communication and reaction requires a hands-on approach with all employees being on the frontlines. Leaders have to learn to assemble and form teams that can work in a collaborative manner without losing speed and respond to competition and challenges.

For this, there needs to be minimal bureaucracy whereby inputs from all employees is respected and everyone makes unique contributions. Without this, a disconnect will form. Thus, organisations will have to adapt and build cultures that permit feedback, sharing and exchange. When these channels of communication undergo change, the structure of the organisation or its DNA will also change to adapt to modern needs.
