A manager triggered outrage on Reddit after she told an employee to heed deadlines after he told her he couldn't breathe
A troubling workplace experience recently drew attention on the Indian Workplace subreddit after an employee described being met with a startlingly indifferent reaction from his superior during a medical scare. The individual recounted how, near the end of his workday, he suddenly felt unable to breathe properly, leaving him visibly distressed and physically unwell just minutes before logging off.

As he struggled to cope, a colleague approached him and reminded him that pending targets still needed to be completed. The employee explained that continuing work was impossible in his condition and that he urgently needed medical attention. The colleague advised him to escalate the matter to their manager. When he contacted her and clearly described his health issue, he expected concern or support. Instead, her response focused entirely on work commitments. She emphasized the urgency of deadlines and suggested that he rest briefly and resume the task early the next morning.

"I say "i can't cuz i need to to doctor." She says pls tell the boss. I called her and explained. She is like "But we have deadline. Take rest and do early morning tomorrow.." he wrote.

This reaction deeply unsettled the employee. He expressed frustration over what he perceived as a complete lack of empathy, noting that some supervisors seem to forget that their team members are human beings, not automated systems designed to function regardless of physical or mental limits. He pointed out that genuine illness is not an excuse but a reality, and no job responsibility should override basic health and safety.

Adding to his distress was the timing of the deadline itself. He revealed that the task was declared urgent only after he had already communicated his inability to complete it within the remaining five minutes of the workday. This, he felt, reflected poor planning and an unreasonable expectation to prioritize output over well-being.

The post sparked widespread discussion among fellow professionals. One commenter observed that organizations often pressure existing staff precisely because replacing them would require time-consuming onboarding and training, suggesting employees should work at a sustainable pace rather than sacrificing their health. Another user echoed a broader sentiment, urging people to value wellness over relentless hustle, arguing that financial gains hold little meaning if one is too unwell to enjoy them.

Overall, the incident highlighted ongoing concerns about workplace culture, leadership sensitivity, and the urgent need for empathy-driven management practices that recognize employees as people first, not just resources.
