Drunken thief breaks into Lucknow home, falls asleep in AC room amid robbery: What happened next?

In a strange incident in Lucknow, a thief was arrested after he fell asleep under an air conditioner while attempting to rob a house. The thief, heavily intoxicated, was discovered by police the next morning, sleeping on the floor of the home he intended to rob. The incident occurred early Sunday morning in the Indiranagar area.

The house, belonging to Dr. Sunil Pandey, was vacant as Dr. Pandey, who works in Varanasi, was away. The thief broke in through the front gate and, after entering the drawing room, found and turned on the air conditioner. Unable to resist the cool air, he lay down, using a cushion as a pillow, and promptly fell asleep.

The open front gate caught the attention of neighbors, who contacted Dr. Pandey. Being out of town, he immediately informed the police. When the officers arrived, they found the thief fast asleep with a mobile phone in his hand. The thief, identified as Kapil, had managed to ransack the house, attempting to steal various items including cash, a washbasin, a gas cylinder, and a water pump. He had even tried to remove the house battery but fell asleep due to his inebriated state.

A viral photo of the scene shows Kapil sleeping soundly despite his surroundings. "He was heavily drunk and could not wake up even when the police arrived," said DCP North Zone R Vijay Shankar. "He entered the house to steal but ended up sleeping due to his intoxicated condition."

Kapil has been charged under IPC section 379 A for theft, and further legal proceedings are ongoing. This peculiar event highlights the extremes of the current heatwave in the region, with the thief opting for a cool nap over completing his crime.
