Dr D's column: Jos Buttler or Ashwin, who was taking advantage during the Mankad episode?
He is one of the leading doctors in the country. He values his privacy (but not of his clients).

Dear Dr D,

The target was 184, the team was on 108/1, and I was on 69. It looked easy and it was easy.

And then, the unthinkable happened. Ashwin did a… a… I cannot bring myself to even say it, but I’ll try, a Mankad on me. It was horrible. I felt violated. It was shameful.

I was outside the crease and he just took the bails off. No warning, no politeness, no grace. It was a moment of evil, Doc. What happened next was entirely predictable: a collapse in the batting and we lost: the first time Punjab beat us on our home ground in Rajasthan!

Is it cheating? Is it a crime? People are saying there should be jail time for this, but I am not certain. What do you think?

Dear Jos,

The rule says that batsmen must remain in their crease. You chose to take a stroll. Run-outs are decided by the most minute of distances in our time. Your being outside the crease means you were taking advantage of the bowler and his team. I see your record says that you have been Mankaded before.

You seem to be a habitual offender. There is certainly cheating and gamesmanship happening here, but it wasn’t Ashwin doing it.
