Dr D's column: Can talking about golf & dogs cost tennis coaches their career?

Dr D recommends inspirational figure Ivan Lendl for the Indian team.

Tennis player Alexander Zverev and former World No. 1 Ivan Lendl (in pic) have parted ways after a 12-month partnership.
Dear Dr D,

I’ve been fired as coach by the world number 5 tennis player Alexander Zverev. He complained I spent more time talking about golf and my dog.

That’s the problem with the jocks of today. They have no understanding of metaphor or parable. Everything must be direct. There is no subtlety and there’s nothing recondite. It’s all forehand, backhand, lob and topspin. But is that the work of a coach? The word is from the Hungarian village of Kocs, where it was first made. However its use in sport comes from Oxford University in the 1830s, where it described an instructor or trainer “carrying” the student through an exam. That is a coach: Someone who takes you into another realm.

The trope of golf on young Zverev was to introduce him, a clay specialist, to the subtleties of grass. Now I may not have won Wimbledon but I have always held that grass is for cows. (Did you know that one of the most productive cows in the United States, the Brahman, comes from India?) And in the dog thing he refers to, I actually used the word hound (from the Proto-Germanic ‘hundaz’) which also means to pursue relentlessly. Anyway, what’s done is done.

What do you think I should do next?
- I Lendl, Prague

You’re an inspirational figure and I’d recommend you for the Indian team, now that Shastri seems to have run his course. It would be fascinating to learn how they would engage with anything other than endorsements and social media. But alas, we will never know.

India Coach Selection: Ravi Shastri And Older Sages Who Bucked The Trend
1/6

The Indian cricket board is taking applications for the job of team coach till July 30. Purely in age terms, Taimur Ali Khan can apply.

“Below 60 years of age” is the only age condition the BCCI has listed on its website for applicants. Taimur is two. Ravi Shastri, the current Indian coach, is a bit older. He is 57.

Nothing against a young coach. But some legendary gurus in sport have been wise sages beyond 60. These are a few of them.

The phlegmatic former Zimbabwe cricketer wasn’t always the life of a party, but at age 65, he coached India to its last ICC triumph, the 2013 Champions Trophy.

That Fletcher succeeded the popular Gary Kirsten, who helped India win a much-awaited second World Cup in 2011, made his task harder. Despite pressures, Fletcher stuck on for four years, oversaw eight series wins and is credited for seeing the team through a transition phase when stalwarts like Sachin Tendulkar and Rahul Dravid retired. We are still waiting to see him smile.

Manchester United’s most famous and successful manager was appointed in 1986, when he was 45, and ran the team 26 years till he was 71. Under the fiery, gum-chewing Scotsman, United won the Premier League 13 times, the Champions League twice and the FA Cup on five occasions. He was 57 during the team’s historic treble in 1999. Six league titles and one Champions League would follow after he crossed 60. All that remains to be done is a David Beckham type hairstyle.

With big jowls and a walrus moustache, he looked like a character from Asterix comics. But Del Bosque’s career was no laughing matter. A few months shy of his 60th birthday, he coached Spain to their only World Cup title in 2010. Two years on, he continued the hottest streak in Spanish football when he managed the team to victory at Euro 2012 with a 4-0 win over Italy in the final. Not bad for a man called Palillo (toothpick) as a youth.

The former doubles expert was appointed India’s Davis Cup tennis captain in 2013, when he was 62. Under him, the team made the World Group playoffs for three years, till he was replaced by Mahesh Bhupathi after murmurs of indiscipline in the squad.

Though not as accomplished as his brother Vijay, Anand was a veteran of Davis Cup battles and a doubles semi-finalist at Wimbledon. His colourful personality and approachability also made him “one of the boys”, and helped his suitability for the job of the captain.

Till the Jerry Sandusky child sex scandal left its stain on Paterno, he was arguably the most revered coach in American football. Penn State meant Joe Pa. And he did not believe in retirement. Paterno, who did not have direct involvement in the Sandusky scandal but was guilty of not speaking up against his colleague, was the head of Penn State University’s respected football programme from 1966 to 2011, when he was almost 85. Paterno coached the University to several titles and over 300 of his students went on to play in the NFL.
