Even as the Indian stock market is plunging to new lows every day, trust Rashesh Shah to cut through the gloom and come up with an analogy for it. Speaking at an event in Mumbai recently, Shah said that the stock market is just like life – full of ups and downs – a fact that also connects sports and business.

“Successful sportspersons are a reminder that a CA or MBA degree means nothing, hard work is all that matters,” he said. This quality, Shah feels is lacking in the corporate world. “We have to be constantly reminded of this.

There is so much to learn from the world of sports. It focuses on discipline, inner-capability, attitude and rewards on the basis of merit,” he added, asking the audience to try and emulate these qualities in their life.

“The song I love to listen to is ‘Free Fallin’ by Tom Petty. It was used in the 1996 movie 'Jerry Maguire'. I love the scene where he’s just won a big deal and is changing the radio station to find the perfect song. I often think of that moment when I am looking for a song. So, Jerry Maguire pumps me up. It’s a bit of advertising, a bit of sports and a great film to marry all of the stuff I’ve been involved in.”
