Dark Matter Season 2 Ending Explained: What happens in Apple TV sci-fi series finale?

Dark Matter Season 2 has come to an end on Apple TV with Leighton Vance's death. In the finale episode titled No Quiet Life, Jason and his friends attempt to turn off the original Box to stop the Pyramid from being activated. While they managed to turn it off, Jason failed to realise that Daniela and Charlie are still travelling through the multiverse. They are now stuck in an unknown reality.

What happened in the Dark Matter Season 2 finale?

The finale starts after Jason 1 and Jason 2 have met and caught up. Daniela travels with a version of Jason to an alternate world where Max is alive. He is Charlie's deceased twin brother. She meets with another version of herself.


The other Daniela tells her to forgive herself and go back to her family. Daniela finds Charlie and spends time with Max. Meanwhile, Ryan and Amanda meet with Oluko at Velocity Labs and get the cure and vaccine for the Black Iris Plague. They plan to take it to the infected Chicago.

Jason, Blair, Ryan and Amanda plan to turn off the original Box. Blair has created a hacking device to upload code to activate Jason's disentanglement plan. They plan to turn off all the Boxes in different realities. Oluko sends Sandra to stop Jason and Blair.

Why did Leighton die?

Leighton comes back with the part needed to activate his Pyramid. His experiences in the alternate realities have changed his view on the technology. He tells Jason 2 that the Box has caused so much destruction. Including a version of himself who let millions of people die from the plague for money.

He decides to permanently stop the Pyramid from being activated and tells Jason 2 that he has put in an emergency kill switch. However, Oluko does not agree. Once he finds out that Leighton has already talked to Jason 2 about his plan, he attacks him and chokes him to death. Jason 2 later finds Leighton's body. He manages to turn the Pyramid offline but Oluko gets away.

Why are Daniela and Charlie stuck?

Jason and Blair reach the original Box and turn the programme on to turn it off. They return to their world with only 58 seconds left on the countdown. Ryan and Amanda make it too and meet up with Blair at the Village Tap. However, Jason fails to realise that Daniela and Charlie are still in the Box.

Before turning it off, Daniela had left a note for Jason saying that she was going to look for Charlie. Once Jason got back he realised that Daniela and Charlie could be stuck in another reality as the Boxes are no longer working.
