Nintendo Direct October 31: Shigeru Miyamoto announces Pikmin Day, Pikmin 4 Switch 2 updates and new shorts

Nintendo Direct October 31 was focused on the Pikmin series. Nintendo announced the presentation would take place 10 minutes before it began. It was hosted by Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto. He said November 1 will be Pikmin day. There was no announcement on Pikmin 5 or any new games. There were only updates to Pikmin 4 Nintendo Switch 2 Edition, new features coming to Pikmin Bloom and an upcoming new animated shorts series.

Pikmin Day

Nintendo announced that November 1 will be Pikmin Day. This isn't the anniversary of the release of the original Pikmin game. The original game was released in Japan in October 2001 and North America in December 2001.

Miyamoto explained that the reason for the date being November 1 is because it represents the three colours of the original Pikmin. When the three colour Pikmin are together they look like the date 11/1. Nintendo have used this to make November 1 an official day for the franchise.

Pikmin 4 Switch 2 updates

Nintendo Direct October 31 showed an extended look at Pikmin 4 – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Dandori Academy. This will be released on November 12, 2026. Players will be able to use the microphone on the Nintendo Switch 2 to give commands to Oatchi. Players can give voice commands such as rush and go to work. The Dandori Academy mode will include new challenges where players will collect treasures. Nintendo announced that there will be a free demo on November 2.

Nintendo also gave details on an upcoming update to Pikmin Bloom. This augmented reality game was developed by Niantic and was released in 2021 for smart phones. The winter update will include a new feature called Secret Caves. Players will be able to send their Pikmin into caves to explore, battle creatures and collect treasures.

Players will need to find Cave Maps to see where they are. These can be found by completing different activities such as collecting Postcards. Players can also earn maps by completing exams in Dandori Academy in Pikmin 4 Switch 2 edition.

New Original Pikmin Short

A new original short was also shown during the presentation. This short showed a Red Pikmin trying to get a baseball back from a frog. The creature used the baseball to escape being eaten by the frog.

Nintendo announced that there will be monthly new shorts added to the Hello! Pikmin series. The next episode will be released on November 1 via the Nintendo Today! app and other methods. Another episode will be released later in November.
