Varun Chaudhary, executive director of CG Corp Global, says his love for cars started when he was 12 and is going strong even today:

First cars

“As far as I can remember, I have had a fascination for cars. I loved washing cars even when I was 12. And when I was older, I loved spending time at the garage whenever the car needed work done. Professional services were always available, but I loved doing it myself.

“At Doon school, we had car mechanics as an extra-curricular activity. Since I was fascinated by the subject, I took it up. As part of this course, we repaired an old Ford car.

“The first car that I owned was a Range Rover Sport, which was gifted to me by my father Binod Chaudhary when I graduated college with an MBA degree. I was 21, and my dad who knew about my love for this car, gifted it to me.”

Current cars
“Now I’m 34, and I have a few more cars. I have a Jaguar XJ, a Rolls-Royce, a Mercedes S Class, a BMW X5, a Mini Cooper, a Volkswagon Touareg, and a Range Rover Supercharged Autobiography, a limited version.

“As a family, we are all diehard fans of Range Rover SUVs. From 1973, in my family, when it comes to SUVs, it has to be a Range Rover. Since I live out of three different places — Dubai, Nepal and India — I have cars at all these places.”

Mom on board
“I love driving my own car and going on road trips. One of my most memorable drives has been from Dubai to Oman. My mother Sarika accompanied me on that trip to keep an eye on my driving, but she slept through the trip. So, I zipped down the highway and did the journey in just four hours. That is something I will remember.

“I carry my iPad whenever I am travelling. It has all my movies and music which are essential while travelling. One app which I find important nowadays is Uber. The app has made it easy to go around a new city. I also make it a point to drink a lot of water while travelling and adjust my sleepclock in advance according to the country I am visiting.”

“My work perks involve frequent travel to Germany and within India. I prefer doing early check-in as it gives me the choice to pre-book my favourite seat on the aircraft. I pack light during business trips and always carry my Beats headphones as it’s my travel buddy. Even though there are apps to help me in a new city, I prefer engaging with people to help me connect with their city and experience the local culture. I’m also a fan of the Instagram app because of its quirky features.”

“I go through a number of apps while preparing for my trip, be it TripAdvisor or the Lonely Planet. But my favourite is Instagram. I prepare my bucket list of places to visit by scrolling through the photo and video sharing app and the stories that people write. It is usually a combination of some handles that I follow and posts which are put up by people in my circle who are travelling.”

“I pack all my meals and snacks, since I am particular about nutrition and taste. I also pack my stuff according to the occasion, so I know exactly how many clothes I need and don’t over-pack. I also make sure to download my favourite podcasts before a flight and carry a travel-size moisturiser to reapply onboard so I don’t arrive at the destination with dehydrated skin. I survive on my Google Calendar, so I’m always on time for my flights and my team knows where I’ll be. Flight Tracker is also a great tool I use to track my loved ones when they are flying.”

“I have got my own travel hack, so I can probably pack in less than seven minutes. I keep two toiletry bags, one for travel and one at home. This saves a lot of time and chances of forgetting an item. I usually have just one outfit combination for a trip, so that I do not waste much time planning my appearance. It’s just a blue shirt and grey trousers you will find me in during a trip. It’s a big time saver. I don’t use any apps for assistance and I am quite disappointed about the introduction of WiFi on planes.”

“Another unforgettable trip was in America with my brother Rahul. We drove from Ohio to New York, which took us a week. We stopped to explore food outlets and enjoy the music, and the best thing about that trip was the bonding that happened between brothers. Until then, I never realised how much fun a sibling could be.

“Mostly, however, I drive solo. It’s therapeutic and helps clear my head. Just a car, a good road, my favourite music and getting behind the wheel can be a stressbuster. I feel my best drives are when it is just me and my music.”

Safety first
“While I do love speed and power in my cars, I had an early safety lesson. My driver, who was wearing a seatbelt, escaped unhurt, but since I wasn’t wearing one, I ended up with broken bones. That taught me an invaluable lesson: When it comes to automobiles, safety comes first.

“Also, whenever there is the slightest hint of anything wrong with the car, I immediately attend to the problem, and see to it that it is fixed in the best possible way. That is why my cars last so long.”.

On celluloid
“I love watching action movies centred around cars. My all-time favourite is Transporter, and I am a huge fan of the way Jason Statham drives when the bad guys are chasing him. It’s the one thing I wish I could do myself.”

My auto wishlist
“I absolutely lust after the Mercedes G63, and want to add this to my garage. It’s the car I would use when I want to make a big statement. When I want to make a stylish entry at an awards night, I would put on a black tie and arrive in this car. Everything about that vehicle inspires awe. When I get a G63, I will call it ‘Tank’.”\

In cinematic lore, Casablanca is where old lovers are reunited, but on the football pitch, there is little love lost between the two clubs that call the city home. The derby between Wydad AS and Raja Casablanca is one of the fiercest in Africa. The city’s biggest stadium, however, was thrice baptized. Built in 1955, it was initially named after the boxer Marcel Cerdan. The next year, after Morocco gained independence from France, it was renamed the Stade d'Honneur. Renovations were made to expand capacity in preparation for the 1983 Mediterranean Games, and it was subsequently renamed after King Mohammed V Ben Yousuff. The stadium now hosts league fixtures and international games.

Nacional, which calls the stadium home, was once financed by slain drug lord Pablo Escobar, and is the most successful club in the Colombia. The fans, like their former patron, are notorious for their boisterous antics in the stands – a total of 315 home fans have been arrested for violent conduct in the past decade. Escobar started investing in Nacional in the 1980s and 1990s, a period known as “Narco Football” in Colombia. Corruption was rife. Matches were rigged. However, football has been at the vanguard of political change in the country, and the Nacional faithful were go-betweens in organizing a truce between Medellin-based drug cartels. The Estadio Atanasio Girardot was remodeled for the U-20 FIFA World Cup in 2011, the first major international tournament to be hosted in the country, marking the end of an era of violence.

Designed by the renowned architect Enrico Del Debbio, the Stadio Olimpico was constructed as a part of the Foro Mussolini project during Italy’s post-war days. The fans are notorious for their violent antics, with clashes between ultras becoming a regular fixture after games. Last year, three Napoli fans were shot by a home fan, and one of the victims succumbed to his injuries. The brand of football played by Roma and Lazio, the two teams who share the facility, is equally combative. Built like a colosseum, the stadium used to host speeches by former fascist dictator, Benito Mussolini. The craft fairs organised outside the stadium are a big draw with tourists, as Audrey Hepburn discovered in 'Roman Holiday'.

Among other things, Red Star has the distinction of beating Liverpool before the latter went on to win the UEFA Champions League. Reds’ manager Jurgen Klopp said after the defeat that his club “failed to find their mojo” and “struggled to adapt to the atmosphere.” A part of the stadium’s imposing nature lies in the labyrinthine tunnels which the players have to pass through before emerging onto the field. The tunnel that leads to the ground is sprayed with graffiti and is a holdover from the Soviet era. Armed guards stand on duty, and it takes over a minute to reach the turf from the dressing rooms. The fans are also known to come armed, although with flares and other pyrotechnics.

Nicknamed La Bombonera, which literally translates to ‘the little cozy place,’ the home of Boca Juniors is anything but snug. It features the smallest possible pitch size permitted by FIFA regulations, which gives fans the impression that they are literally on top of the action. The three steep stands add to this impression. Notable players to have graced its turf include Diego Maradona, Carlos Tevez, and Juan Roman Riquelme. The home fans, known to be a vociferous bunch, are known to cause the stadium to tremble when in full voice, a viewpoint seconded by River Plate legend Hernan Crespo, who added the effect may also be due to structural flaws in the stadium’s design.
