A horizontal skyscraper may sound out of this world, but over 6,000 construction workers are working round the clock to build what is touted to be one of the most iconic structures in China. Stretching 984 feet like a horizontal skyscraper, the enormous glass-walled structure is priced at a staggering 2.7 billion pounds. It comprises eight skyscrapers: six at 820 feet tall and two at 1,148 feet tall.

Completed in 2002, the Kingdom Centre is the tallest skyscraper in Saudi Arabia, with a height of 992 feet. The total cost to build the structure was approximately $1 billion. Also known as Burj-Al-Mamlaka, the structure has an unusual keyhole design — the architects created it to conform to city laws which don’t allow occupied floors above a certain height. It also houses the world’s second tallest mosque on its 77th floor.

Also called the Hotel of Doom, its construction sat in limbo long enough for people to think that it had been abandoned. Pyongyang’s pyramid shaped structure is a 105-storey building – its construction began in 1987 and was said to take two years then. However, after several decades of abandonment, recently, the tip of the hotel had a 360-degree LED panel showing an animated North Korean flag, hinting at a revival.

Located in northern Bangkok’s Lad Phrao district, this 102-meter-high jumbo building, with eyes and tusks, towers above a busy junction. Opened in 1997, the massive urban complex houses a shopping mall, business offices and luxury condominiums on 32 floors. Its ears are actually multi-storey balconies, its eyes are huge windows and its tail comprises 20 stories of smoked-glass enclosed rooms.

The Tour Triangle will be the first skyscraper to be built in low-lying Paris in nearly 40 years. The construction of the structure began in 2017 and is estimated to be complete by 2020. The structure may stand out like a sore thumb at 180 metres but the Eiffel Tower will still rule the city’s skyline at 300 metres.
