Few coming-of-age comedies have captured the awkwardness, chaos and warmth of teenage life quite like Derry Girls. With its sharp humour, unforgettable friendships and backdrop of 1990s Northern Ireland during the Troubles, the series became a global favourite. Created and written by Lisa McGee, the sitcom drew inspiration from her own childhood growing up in an Irish Catholic family in Derry, making its characters and stories feel both hilarious and authentic. If you've finished binge-watching Derry Girls and are looking for something with a similar blend of humour, heart and memorable characters, these four shows deserve a place on your watchlist.

The Inbetweeners

If you enjoyed the awkward teenage humour of Derry Girls, The Inbetweeners is an easy next pick. Created and written by Damon Beesley and Iain Morris, the British coming-of-age sitcom originally aired on E4 between 2008 and 2010.

The series follows William McKenzie, played by Simon Bird, and his friends Simon Cooper, Neil Sutherland, and Jay Cartwright, portrayed by Joe Thomas, Blake Harrison, and James Buckley, respectively. Together, they stumble through embarrassing school moments, friendships, romance and adolescence at the fictional Rudge Park Comprehensive. Although it received a modest response at its premiere, the sitcom later became one of the most celebrated British comedies of the 21st century.

Moone Boy

Fans who appreciated the Irish humour and nostalgic setting of Derry Girls should also try Moone Boy. The Irish sitcom was created, co-written by and stars Chris O'Dowd, alongside co-writer Nick Vincent Murphy. Inspired by O'Dowd's own childhood, the show follows Martin Moone, a 12-year-old boy growing up in Boyle, County Roscommon, during the late 1980s and early 1990s. Martin's imaginary friend, Seán Murphy, helps him navigate everyday challenges while his vivid imagination brings his drawings and elaborate schemes to life.

Produced by Baby Cow Productions, Sprout Pictures, Hot Cod Productions and Grand Pictures, the series combines childhood nostalgia with quirky humour and heartfelt family moments.

Father Ted

For viewers who enjoy distinctly Irish comedy, Father Ted remains a timeless classic. Created by Irish writers Graham Linehan and Arthur Mathews, the sitcom is widely regarded as one of the greatest comedy series ever made.

Set on the fictional Craggy Island off Ireland's west coast, the story follows Father Ted Crilly, played by Dermot Morgan, along with fellow priests Father Dougal McGuire, portrayed by Ardal O'Hanlon, and Father Jack Hackett, played by Frank Kelly. The trio live together under the watchful eye of housekeeper Mrs Doyle, portrayed by Pauline McLynn, after being exiled by Bishop Leonard Brennan, played by Jim Norton.

Beneath its witty humour, the show explores themes including loneliness, existentialism and faith. Father Ted won multiple British Academy Television Awards, including Best Comedy Series twice, and remains hugely popular across Ireland and the UK.

On My Block

If you enjoyed the strong friendships and emotional storytelling in Derry Girls, On My Block offers a fresh perspective with a different setting. Created by Lauren Iungerich, Eddie Gonzalez and Jeremy Haft, the American teen comedy-drama is set in the fictional Los Angeles neighbourhood of Freeridge.

The series stars Sierra Capri, Jason Genao, Brett Gray, Diego Tinoco, Jessica Marie Garcia, Julio Macias and Peggy Blow. It follows four close friends as they navigate high school while trying to stay away from the gang violence surrounding their community. Despite tackling serious issues, the show balances emotional storytelling with humour through its memorable characters and friendships. Its mix of comedy and drama earned it the Choice Breakout TV Show award at the 2018 Teen Choice Awards, along with nominations from the Black Reel Awards and the Imagen Awards.
