After royal wedding, will Granny’s English get a ‘Meghan effect’?

George Bernard Shaw is supposed to have observed that “The United States and Great Britain are two countries separated by a common language” and since so much hangs on nuance even in verbal communication, someone ought to warn the newly anointed Duchess of Sussex, formerly Meghan Markle. Her husband, the Duke of Sussex, aka Prince Harry, speaks what he probably calls Granny’s English, but the former California resident and TV star certainly did not grow up speaking exactly the same idiom. And now that Granny herself will be part of many a family matter, it could be quite daunting for her new American grand-daughter-in-law. So many words of their common language now have a mixed provenance, so the newest member of the British royal family probably epitomises English more than Queen Elizabeth II herself.

The fact that many villains in American movies and serials over the years have had British accents would not be lost on the former 'Suits' actor, though it’s been over 240 years since the US divested Prince Harry’s royal ancestor King George III of this New World colony.

How her American accent will fare when negotiating archetypal British phrases will no doubt be as closely watched as information on whether she has switched to a royal blend of Earl Grey tea for her breakfast cuppa or he has opted for an Americano.
