Malting is the process by which raw grain is converted into malt through controlled germination.
Craft beer may be the fad right now, but Anheuser-Busch, the parent company of Budweiser is already planning for the future. In a world, far, far away, they intend to brew beer in microgravity. The company has been sending barley seeds to the International Space Station since 2017.
The space race, a product of the Cold War, has run its course, but breweries are now jumping on the bandwagon to create novelties, with the global market for beer hitting a plateau in recent years. Anheuser-Busch intends to be the first brewer to set up a keg on Mars.
The latest batch of seeds and supplies will be dispatched to the ISS aboard a SpaceX shuttle. The resupply mission will be SpaceX’s 19th for NASA, and will help the American beer maker gain more insight into the malting ability of barley seeds in space.
Malting is the process by which raw grain is converted into malt through controlled germination. The malt, thus produced, is used for brewing or distilling whisky. It can also be used to make malt extract and malt vinegar.
The experiment will be one of the 250 facilitated by the Elon Musk-owned aerospace company. The ingredients will be ferried to the ISS from Launch Complex 40, Cape Canaveral Air Force Station on Wednesday. Weather forecasters have predicted clear skies, and that conditions will probably be 90 per cent “go” for the launch. If all goes to plan, the mission will take off at 12.51 p.m. East Coast time.
Other items that will travel along with Anheuser Busch’s organic payload include the first Mexican-developed nanosatellite name AzTechSat-1. An experiment examining the behavior of flames in space will also be hitching a ride with the Budweiser parent’s magic seeds.

The research will examine how fire spreads in confined spaces in microgravity. It could help improve safety standards in space and give engineers a look at the underlying science behind combustion when gravity is no longer a variable in the equation.
Another notable experiment is one that looks to study muscle and bone loss in space through empirical tests on mice. The space shuttle will use sophisticated imaging systems that are capable of taking high-resolution photos of the Earth’s surface in all colours of the light spectrum.
The festive season is going to be a very busy for technicians at the Space Coast in Florida. Boeing is planning to test launch its first astronaut capsule to the ISS. SpaceX has nearly 60 communication satellites ready for takeoff.

The beer for beginners, lagers are brewed at low temperatures, using the bottom-fermenting strains of yeast. This yeast has a lower tolerance to alcohol, making many lagers light and crisp (though that doesn’t hold true for all of them and don’t be surprised to spot a dark, rich lager).
Talking about the growing trend of lager consumption in India, Mahesh Kanchan, Vice President- Marketing, Carlsberg India, said, “Lagers are synonymous with a refined and distinctly satisfying taste.
"Known for their deep, full-flavoured malty notes, lagers have seen great appreciation from the Indian consumer base."

Brewed with top fermenting yeast at warmer temperatures, ales are usually full-bodied with a hoppy finish. Top-fermenting yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) has greater tolerance to alcohol, and hence produces stronger (higher alcohol content) beers.
Ales tend to be darker, have a cloudier appearance, and a stronger, more robust flavour.

Wheat beer, as the name suggests, is made up of at least 50 per cent wheat. The wheat content is much higher than in other beers that primarily contain barley or rye.
While most wheat beers are pale and cloudy, they are also light and refreshing.
Some varieties are Hefeweizen (a Bavarian beer with banana, bubblegum, and clove notes), Dunkelweizen (a darker hefeweizen with a more roasted malt), Weizenbock (a stronger hefeweizen with more fruit and malt flavours), Witbier (a Belgian style wheat beer), Berliner Weisse (a northern Bavarian light and sour beer), and American Wheat (the American version of a German wheat beer).
