The overlooked brain-damaging food
According to Dr. Austin Perlmutter, MD, sugar—particularly liquid sugar—may be one of the worst offenders for long-term brain health. Unlike refined carbohydrates or fried foods, sugary drinks are absorbed extremely fast. Beverages such as soft drinks, packaged fruit juices, energy drinks and sweetened teas cause sudden spikes in blood sugar levels. To manage this surge, the body repeatedly releases large amounts of insulin, a process that can eventually disrupt how the brain responds to insulin.The brain depends on glucose to function, but it needs a steady and controlled supply. Repeated sugar highs and crashes interfere with this balance. Over several years, excessive sugar intake can lead to inflammation and oxidative stress in brain cells, both of which are linked to cognitive decline.
Liquid sugar reaches the bloodstream much faster than sugar from solid foods. Because drinks do not create the same feeling of fullness, people often consume far more sugar than they realise. This pattern places continuous strain on the brain’s metabolic system and may contribute to insulin resistance within brain tissue.
Research suggests that prolonged exposure to high sugar levels can damage brain cells and interfere with processes related to memory, learning and decision-making. Early symptoms often include poor focus, mental fatigue and brain fog, which may worsen if high sugar intake continues.
Impact on children and developing brains
Studies indicate that sugary drinks are especially harmful when consumed early in life. A large Korean cohort study found that children who consumed more than 200 ml of sugary beverages daily before the age of two showed higher rates of attention-related disorders later. Similar findings from studies in Spain and China linked frequent soft drink intake in school-age children to lower cognitive performance and increased ADHD risk.Long-term data also suggest that children exposed to high levels of sugary drinks may score lower on cognitive tests as adults.
Replacing sugar with artificial or low-calorie sweeteners may not fully protect the brain. An eight-year Brazilian study observed faster decline in memory, verbal fluency and overall thinking ability among individuals who regularly consumed sweeteners such as aspartame, saccharin, acesulfame K, erythritol and xylitol. Research published in the journal Neurology also reported quicker cognitive decline among people with high intake of sugar substitutes, particularly those under 60.
What scientific reviews reveal
A comprehensive review published on ScienceDirect examined over 300 studies and found strong evidence that long-term sugar consumption affects brain pathways linked to stress, emotion and reward. The findings suggest that sugar activates neural systems in a way similar to addictive substances, reducing impulse control and reinforcing cravings.Meanwhile, a systematic review and meta-analysis by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), covering 77 human studies, found consistent links between excessive added sugar intake and higher risk of cognitive impairment. While short-term glucose intake may briefly support recall, prolonged and excessive consumption showed harmful effects on long-term brain function.
The World Health Organization recommends limiting free sugar intake to less than 10 percent of daily calories, with 5 percent offering added health benefits. A single litre of soft drink can exceed this limit. Reducing sugary beverages and replacing them with water or unsweetened drinks may help preserve memory, focus and overall cognitive health over time.
