Boss questions Gen Z employee’s work hours
As per the post, the boss confronted the Gen Z employee, claiming that he had noticed her leaving early nearly every day. The confused Gen Z employee clarified that she left at 5 p.m., which was when her workday officially ended. The boss argued that closing her laptop at 5 p.m. was the same as leaving early. When questioned about this by the Gen Z employee, he explained that although he personally stops working at 5 p.m., he spends another 30 minutes wrapping up, ultimately leaving at around 5:30 p.m.
The Gen Z employee pointed out that wrapping up her workday was also part of her scheduled working hours. She further questioned the expectation that she should continue working after she was no longer being paid to do so. The exchange continued when the boss suggested that it was “fairly bold” for the Gen Z employee to begin shutting things down before 5 p.m.
Gen Z employee gives a sharp response
The boss then questioned whether the Gen Z employee also started preparing for work at 8 a.m. To this, she confirmed that she did, as her official working hours began at 8 a.m., in accordance with company policy. The boss then instructed the Gen Z employee to continue working until 5 p.m. and only begin wrapping up afterwards.Instead of arguing further, the Gen Z employee opened her calendar and made a change to her schedule for the following day. Noticing that she had shifted her start time to 8:30 a.m., the boss questioned the change.
The Gen Z employee calmly explained that if she was now expected to stay until 5:30 p.m. to wrap up her day, she would accordingly start at 8:30 a.m., as she was contractually obligated to work 8 hours a day. The boss fell silent at the unexpected answer, bringing the exchange to an end.
